I bought this on the last sale. It is about the same as regular computer USB port. The spec said MAX 1000MA. My guess is it is only 500MA. My OEM phone charge is 800MA and is much faster.

it actually depends upon the cable you use. a computer USB port is limited to 500mA. thus, when you connect a standard data cable to the computer or to one of these chargers, the phone will only utilize 500mA. an actual OEM wall charger with integrated cable has the two data pins shorted together so that the phone can identify it as a charger that can provide more than 500mA, thus your device will charge faster. if you could find a cable with the data pins shorted together, you'd see the same - but i don't think such cables exist for common sale.

Can one fix it with a bit of solder?

not likely. buying a proper charger is your best bet. or, deal with the slower charge rate.

I thought a slow charge was good for lithium batteries? Maybe I'm confusing that with Ni-Cd?

Yeap. But you need to open up the charger.

You can download the Asus app for the computer to speed it up (You don't need to solder any wires). It only works with iphone. My Android Phone doesn't work.

What I am saying in the previous post this charge is about the SAME speed as charging using the USB port on the computer. The spec for 1000MA is not correct.

Notice : 1 AMP is too low for charging a tablet fast enough. The one that came with nexus 7 is 2 AMP IIRC

In the comments section half the people say it doesn't work with various phones or other electronic devices.
"Automatic shut-off"
"Over-charging protection"
Would it work with a simple load like a USB LED light or USB fan or device along those lines? Anyone tried?

Cheap chargers make touch screens go funky if you use it while charging. Has to do with power output fluctuations or something. Read it somewhere after experiencing this very phenomenon with a Deal Extreme charger.
FYI, you can check for "OEM" charger and cables on eBay. I got some for <$10. Maybe they are knockoffs, but the work as well as the original.
And you can mod a regular USB cable so that it charges faster, but you won't be able to use it for data. Saw it on the Android developers forum. It involved cutting two (?) wires, cross-connecting one pair, then leaving the other pair disconnected, if I remember correctly. The dude recommended modding a USB extension cable, so you can then use it with various cables of different USB sizes (eg. micro, mini, regular). Personally, I would just buy one of those eBay chargers + cables, and save the hassle.

Think I read a different post before, but this one also has the info.

Useless as a USB power supply if there is no fast charge.
