You can definitely still do asphalt shingles this time of year. As soon as the sun hits them they will seal. It's not ideal but it can be done. With that said my inlaws have a metal roof. If you haven't priced them you may be in for a bit of a surprise. The metal roof on their 1000 sq ft bungalow was over $10k, $14k IIRC. There can be a few things that you also need to be aware of with metal roofs. Snow and ice can slide off the roof at any time. It can be dangerous for people and can be damaging to landscaping and decks, etc. Sliding ice has actually totally ruined 4 gazebo frames in the last 16 years or so. On the positive side they say they are lifetime roofs that never need to be replaced. Who knows how true that will be though, the version of metal roofing being used now hasn't really been around that long...

Metal Roofs
The house we just bought needs a new roof desperately. I am considering getting a steel/metal roof, something like this http://www.hygraderoofing.com/. What are peoples experience with such roofs? One of the reasons I am considering a metal roof is because I would like to do our roof now, but I am told that asphalt shingles should never be put on this time of year because they need high temperatures to seal properly. I'm assuming that it wouldn't matter what time of year you put a metal roof on??

metal covering on your roof can be noisey too. If there is heavy rain/hail you'll hear it for sure.

I have a metal roof on my house. Had it installed a few years ago by
http://www.metroc.com/
They use metal roofing products from:
http://www.accelroofing.com/advantaaccel/
The metal roof went on over our existing roof. There is absolutely no noise on rainy days. Roof came with a 50yr warranty. I had them back for a leak that turned out to be a gasket on my zero clearance chimmney (about 3 ft above the roof - where two sections of the chimmney pipe were joined)- since the guy was up there inspecting the roof - he fixed the chimmney for me at NO CHARGE.
The only downside is the fact that snow slides off the roof as soon as the outside temp warms up. It sounds like an avalanche for about 10 seconds as the snow slides off. They do offer snow guard strips to prevent this if you are so inclined.
Cost was slightly more than asphalt shingles.
2300 sq ft of roofing installed cost $9800. (including valleys and flashing made of the same metal roofing material)
Hygrade roofing tiles look nice however rumour is they have problems with their finish sticking to the metal roofing and it begins to deteriorate after 5 or 6 years. Their guarantee only convers leakage and not the finish peeling.
Would I purchase a metal roof again. Definately.

We had a Hygrade roof put on our house five years ago. Love it. Last year we had the carriage house done when the shingles started to fail.
With the house you do not hear a metal noise when it rains as there is a gap between the old roof and the new one. They strap the old roof and put wedges in where ever they need to level out the roof. We noticed a definite improvement in our bedroom air temp right away. We had our roof done during a really hot summer and the temp. in the house dropped and the air conditioner ran less. The carriage house was done this past winter, the guys had no problems working during the cold weather. It looks strange when they install the shingle as they work from the top and come down the roof.
Loved the fact the warranty is transferable if we ever sell. Would definitely go with Hygrade again if we ever move.
Sure a metal roof is more money now, but during 50 years you could have to do your roof 3 times with asphalt shingles. Metal works out cheaper.Last edited by mrsmagoo2001; Nov 27th, 2007 at 07:55 PM.

The 'rents have a Hygrade roof. Great product, and not noisy at all. It's been there for 10 years, and no noticeable fading yet.
When we get our "final" home, this is what we'll be getting.

Its not as bad as you'd think it would be. That was my big concern as well, and none of the people I know that have metal roofs (including our in-laws)notice much difference. I'd consider it for our house, but I dont think it would look right on our syle of house. Many of our neighbors at the cottage have them though, and i would get one there as well.

Even Mike Holmes likes metal roofing. If you do the research, you'll find they make more sense. See
