It's not contradictory, it's smart business. Microsoft supports Hd-dvd, probably to the death, but if it were to die, then they can easily switch to Blu-ray and still have a competative console.
Unlike Sony, who decided to put an unproven technology into their console right away. If blu-ray fails, then they are stuck with a extremely expensive 'console', since it could no longer be considered an entertainment unit.

It's no more contradictory than Sony selling VHS players when Beta failed.
If you were one of the ones who openly stated that Titanic wouldn't sink, it's not being contradictory to jump off to save your life when it was going under.

It's also no more contradictory than Sony touting the 100% backward compatibility for the PS3 and then stripping out the EE later.
Sony making VHS decks was a good one too

While I think it was a stupid move on Sony's part, and contrary to their advertising, they may in time get 100% backward compatability on their European models with the use of firmware updates. A lot of work is being done to make this happen, although I have no idea if they will in fact reach 100%.
