[Microsoft Store] $249 ASUS X551MAV

Another one of the $250 laptop PCs. The dell is now in STOCK as well.

Tech Specs:

-Intel N2830
-3-cell battery, apparently upto 5 hours.
-4 GB RAM
-500 GB HDD
-2.13 Kg

This ASUS comes with one USB 3.0 port (& only one 1 USB 2.0 port).
It seems this one has a VGA, HDMI and an Ethernet port as well.
(only shown in the pics, not mentioned in the tech specs so can't confirm).

There's no optical drive afaik.

Kinda heavy for a 3-cell unit.

Performance wise, they should be the same. But if you're specifically looking for some functionality like an Ethernet port, a USB 3.0 & a VGA port, this might be the one.

The Dell does come with a bigger battery (4 cell), but again you miss out on a USB 3.0, VGA and an Ethernet port

The Dell E6410 is $329.99 at Newegg.ca with 4GB of ram instead of 2 GB.

or Price Beat at memory express for $313

no ethernet really sucks, as I inadvertently find myself in a hotel room, resort, ski lodge, conference room, study area, etc, without wifi and only wired access.

Not sure how old refurbs got into this thread. I would take Asus over Dell in terms of build quality any day. It has the same slowpoke "Celeron" (really an Atom) CPU as the Dell. Dell might have a good deal coming in the rest of the 12 days of deals.

How do these compare to the Acer ones on sale at The Source? I ended up ordering these instead and will test accordingly (some of the info on The Source's website seems to be inconsistent with the pictures). Any info on how these compare to the $249 ones from Microsoft would be great (or the refurbs that were mentioned from BestBuy).

$379.99 - http://www.thesource.ca/estore/product. ... ct=8021066

$369.96 - http://www.thesource.ca/estore/product. ... ct=8020743

And these two are both open box / demo units, so I understand it's probably hard to compare. But just looking from a specs perspective and if these two are any good. Otherwise, I will return and buy something else.

TIA!

I agree what Intel did this year with the Celerons is really shady. Normally the Celeron is their previous generation middle of the road chip. This year they took their bottom of the line chip and reintroduced it at a higher price point.
A lot of people will be duped into buying an incredibly slow performing laptop.

These are 2nd gen i3 machines and they are Acer. Some people swear by Acer but I have found build quality to be lacking in general. These machine are 2 to 3 times faster than the Asus in this thread. The 2375 is actually slower despite being newer because it consumes less than the wattage of the 2318. All in not bad deals but you can get a regular-priced i3 4th-gen for 450$ at Dell:

How is VGA a deal sealer? Isn't VGA an older technology? Nowadawys most TVs have HDMI, with the addition of VGA in some models.

A lot of older screens still only have a VGA connector. Since this a laptop you could theoretically have to connect this in multiple environments some of which only have VGA.

Thanks for the information. I've been out of the whole processor/laptop scene for over 10 years and I'm just looking for something to replace a dying desktop. Knowing that these two are 2-3 times faster than the Asus posted in this thread will most likely lead me to buying one of the ones from the source instead. I had no idea that the cheaper one with the i3-2328M chip was faster than the i3-2375M chip. I contemplated the newer 4th gen ones at dell for $450 (they had one for $429 as well), but now I'm significantly going over the $249/$299 price point. lol...

I had one to try out last Xmas. The unit is huge and very thick. Much thicker than Costcos Dell. The build quality is okay, lots of keyboard and chasis flex. The screen was the dissapointment though.
