This is perfect for anyone who needs a casual browsing / media / office machine.

great selection of ports, dvd drive... not to be judging but this would be a great purchase for parents / elderly ... has all the features they would need, higher res doesn't matter to most of them, and a solid name brand to possibly help with support (if you can transfer that warranty over)

at the price, cant really go wrong. you can be under $500 all in with an ssd in this.

well worth it to spend $349 on this versus spending $225-300 on some netbook with an atom cpu and 2gb ram.

It's a $349 laptop, you shouldn't expect 1920 at this price range.

but there doesn't seem to be many real hd 15.6" laptops (with current cpu, etc.) for less than $700, so there is a definite problem in this "china-made" business strategy. you can buy a pretty nice bottom-half of a laptop for $300-$350, but in order to actually get a display that doesn't make your eyes bleed, it is twice that or more? I can buy a new 1920x1020 laptop screen on ebay for $50, and it's definitely cheaper through an OEM, so what's up?

I read an article where manufacturers are literally giving away these low-rez 1366x768 junk displays because they are so incredibly cheap to make and no one else wants them for anything.

No cost just a hassle. I'm going through this for my dead Dell. Their systems are really stupid. Just takes a long time to get through all the hoops. Mind you I paid only $225 or so for the edu price on the celeron model not this one.

#1 - a couple of years ago you wouldn't even get a damn laptop for $300-350, so I don't see the point in bitching about the res on laptops that cost as much as cheap tablets.

#2 - the bottom line is funny ... why would the manufacturers continue to make them then? clearly, they produce some sort of profit as they can just decide to stop production, the laptop makers want them, so factories produce, don't blame the factories who make screens here lol.

yep, welcome to the new world of china-made generic laptops, where "free" 1366x768 junk-screens are used for virtually everything to save money. a real hd 1920x1080 15.6" screen might cost the oem $25, but the junk screen is probably $2, so they make more money.. that is, until consumer say no to junk screens!

they keep making them because there are existing 1366x768 lcd factories, that should have been shut down years ago (no TV or even the majority of tablets would use such a horrible resolution) but rather than be refitted and renovated for current technology (at a significant cost), they found a "new market" for their junk, and keep pumping out these ancient laptop screens (at an extremely low cost) then sell them at a profit to greedy north american laptop vendors looking to pinch more pennies.

I don't know if you realize this, but even a decade ago, base laptop resolutions were *higher* than they are today, often significantly so. for a laotop in the $500-$700 range, a 13" would have a 1440×900 screen, a 14" either a 1440×900 or 1680×1050 and a 15" would have a 1680×1050, or at worst a 1440×900 (still better than 1366x768) with a 1920×1200 being an upgrade option.

even crappy 15" low-end screens, sold at a virtually-nil price, will have destitute laptop manufacturers beating down their doors. they are literally giving away these junk displays, and companies like dell, hp, etc. are buying them because they can squeeze more profits from stupid consumers. the problem is, that the process has gone too far and now 95% of laptops use these junk screens and there is no choice for consumers. then dell, hp, etc. have too many unsellable junk screen laptops, so they clear them out, while ordering even more of the "latest model with the 1366x768 screen".

at some point, this process will reverse itself, but not until a) consumers say no to junk displays and b) someone finally upgrades these ancient 1366x768 lcd factories to the new millennium.

I wouldn't mind of they actually made a bilingual keyboard, but these are actually "canadian french" keyboards, designed for french first, and then allowing english people to also peck away as well. don't believe me? look it up.
