Is this one of those threads where folks convince me to buy this as a beater travel laptop?

I was using Ubuntu "Live" on a USB dongle and everything seemed to work fine. This was 18.04.
I read that "UEFI mode must be disabled for Wi-Fi to work with Linux". In other words, in BIOS 'Boot options', set 'Legacy Support' = Enable.

Read the first user view in this URL. That user gave the above advice for Mint 19 installation on the eMMC drive i.e. permanent installation and not Linux Live on a USB drive,

This is one of those Harlequin Romances where the heroine (you) noisily hates the object-of-desire until she discovers she's in love with it. Unfortunately, that's where the novels end so we don't know if the OoD is a wife-beater (or the other way around).

More seriously, I find these sorts of things to be great for casual use: no fan, long battery life, remarkably good display, no delicate spinning parts. I don't fret about mine getting lost or damaged.

Since some of my casual use is browsing, I do find it irritating how my normal large complement of tabs bogs the machine down. But my desktop with 24GiB of RAM gets bogged down too.

I have 11.6" and 13.3" FullHD notebooks. I seem to gravitate to using the 13.3" one on the couch (i.e. where I don't have to carry it when not in use). I suspect that 14" HP might be even better as a sedentary notebook.

Sorry it was 18.04.3 to be precise.

I did notice it was not waking up after closing and opening the lid, I'm not sure if that's just a "Live" issue or not, haven't had the time to look into it.
I grab this statement from the URL below.
"-Suspend/Hibernate issues is resolved by updating the kernel to version 4.19+. Easy way to update is using Ukuu (Ubuntu Kernel Update Utility)."

I did not disable UEFI mode, and Wi-Fi works fine.

I did notice in the review you linked that the sleep/hibernate problem can be resolved by updating the kernel, which is good to know.

Can it run youtube 1080P or 4K streams and play simple games like Roblox (on a more advanced textured map) smoothly? I have an older Samsung Tab A 8.0 tablet and it glitches like crazy on more textured heavy maps/scenes.
Asking the same for my kids, it'd be a great gift if it plays Roblox and Star Stable... anybody try light gaming on it?

Interesting. Many notebooks, especially low end ones, no longer allow "legacy support".

"Legacy support" should not improve WiFi support. I just cannot think of a mechanism for them to be connected.

"Legacy support" is best not used if you can avoid it. UEFI is a serious improvement over what it replaced (booting by loading the boot sector and jumping to it in 8086 mode). Disk partitioning under UEFI is much nicer too.

Food for thought. I'll meditate on the question.

The 4GB ram module sits in a slot and is not soldered onto the mainboard. You may upgrade it to 8GB to alleviate this multiple tabs problem on this laptop at least to some extent.

Would this work well as a HTPC (with screen)? My mi box is giving me headache for slow down after sleep. Instead of getting an aging nvidia shield, maybe this will be more versatile with a wireless keyboard/touchpad?

Is is possible to put in an SSD into this thing? If so it could be perfect for my dad. I had been meaning to get him a 10" hd tablet but this seems like way better value.
