Started to buy parts for my new build this morning, when I found that Mike's Computer Shop has the i5-6600k on sale for $319.99 + free shipping (PS: Use coupon code 5CONFIRM100 for extra $5 off, to make it $314.99). Cheapest price I could find anywhere. Also paired it up with a Asus Maximus Hero VIII for $294.99 (also cheapest around).

Damn, wasn't aware there was a new socket (LGA1151) for Skylake.

I guess my current mobo goes no further than Broadwell. :\

The performance gain from each gen CPUs is so little now without competition, but it does prolong computer's lifespan and saves people money on upgrading.

When I built my current main desktop around Z77 and i7-2600K all those years ago, I completely did not expect to still be perfectly happy with using it going into 2016. Completely nuts.

I'm sitting on a six year old Intel Core2 Duo P8600, but the screen broke on the laptop (using it on my TV) so it's time to get a shiny new Skylake with 4c/8t this year.

When I built mine with i5 4690k I bought for 200 + tax a year ago, I did not expect the price to be higher today. Probably the weak CAD but nonetheless

I'm sittimg on a 6 year old I5 750 that still does the job but not what I want for. I was actually looking at this Cpu a couple of days ago to upgrade.

I hate to spend alot of money for a new desktop but I really want to do what I use to do for my hobby. That is video editing.

Thanks for the post op. If possible could we also get some other parts list that would go well for this cpu?

Ditto! I'm still rockin' an original Core i7-860 - that darn thing is 6 years old this year and still going strong.

I'm definitely glad to have paid for the best parts I could afford at the time.

well, first with our canadians currency down, u pay a i5 what would buy you an i7 2years ago
And like what people said, there is about 8-10% increase between Haswell and Skylake
For now those sitting on a 2600k or highter should wait for next 3D xpoint technology that gonna be releasing to public in 2016-2017: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/3D_XPoint
And if you dont do lot gaming like me, a Q6600 or core DUO from 07-08 still do a good job even if running on DDR2 and old I/O(PCIE2/USB2) really depands on how you taxing your Machine

Hell im still running about anything with a overclocked 20th anniversary pentium(G3258-60$ processor) on a 1080p screen as my second PC, most people wont need much more then this for their facebook addiction....

I think the majority of benefits on skylake will mostly apply to laptops and tablets battery life. If you are on previous gen desktop you probably won't gain too much.

Even if it was the same socket, it might not have supported it.

Such is the life of motherboards :(

seriously i have a i7 5820, yeah it does have 6core/12thread but let me tell you something, CPU are too strong now compare to the other components. Let put this clear, with my CPU i can run 18 virtual machine with multiple nested virtualization complexity with virtual SAN software running all in the same box and i get about 30-40% CPU Load. I'm a power user and i still cant beat it to death.. So please, dont invest too much in your cpu and invest more on a GPU or monitor quality. Of course if you do transcoding or video editing or Animation you will need that high performance CPU.. do your research

I would like to add "get an SSD" to that list for those currently living without one.

The weaker CAD is to blame for high prices. I remember paying $150 for I5 3570k on black friday 3 years ago!

agreed, there is really no reason to upgrade a desktop cpu+mb+memory platform, as performance is just not enough to warrant it. I'm still gaming on my sandy bridge desktop pc (have upgraded video cards twice).

but on mobile platforms, it's a different story, and just the high-end integrated graphics skylake brings makes it worth it. now, you can actually buy a high-end intel cpu and actually mainstream game on the integrated gpu. dedicate will always be better, but this is still great news.

only partially, and until skylake parts get out there in mass quantities, prices will remain high.

My main is a Intel Core i5-3570 (non-K) that I built in 2013, cost $185 + tax for the CPU, runs every game I have thrown at it combined a 7870 XT on medium to high at a stable 60 fps (with a few tweaks here and there) and I often run 4 XP virtual machines on it.

I was going to upgrade in early to mid 2016, but after seeing benchmarks of skylake i5s the performance increase isn't significant enough.

+1. I recently upgraded to a Samsung EVO 850 500GB as my main drive and it makes a world of difference. Though the cost is high, it's well worth the investment.
