First time posting so apologies if I didn't get the formatting correct.

This is a great deal for WD Gold HDDs.

Extra $10 off at Mike's with coupon code: FALL2017 EDIT: Seems to have expired - try 5CONFIRM100 for $5 off

Note: previous sale was $399.99 less $10 coupon, although this is still a great deal IMO.

Thread Summary
Bought drives from Mike's 2x, both times marked as new, one came poorly packaged. One time sent me a refurbed drive, wouldn't cover shipping back.

Just a hassle of a store to deal with. They have good prices, but shitty service.

Reply from Mike's to Jayznak
These are brand new and sealed. These drives were all purchased from distribution over the last week. If you have had a negative experience, I would like to review and see what happened. All our drives sold as new are shipped new, and are purchased from proper WD Authorised Canadian Distributors.

Reply to Mike:
Yeah, negative experiences are so easily resolved when a company doesn't even publish a contact number for online sales, and instead posts: Sorry, our retail stores cannot assist with online orders.

About regular price? Pc canada list it as regular price 397$ with 248 in stock. About 10$ cheaper on mikes which is about 2.5% discount... wait for black friday?

Haven't seen it this cheap... especially for a WD Gold. Didn't know PC Canada had it for so cheap too. Either way - both are good deals.

Are those meant to be powered on all the time so it can self surface check when idle?
I'm asking because I plan to get one just for backing up then unplug when done.

I'm not an expert, but I don't really see anything wrong with that. Yes, these drives are enterprise-grade and designed to be powered on 24x7 (and come with a 5-year warrant), but my guess is that you will not be doing any harm by powering them down when not in use.

Great find OP, thanks. Super price for an actual available item. Golds are fabulous.

They are designed to be on all the time and have several different types of error checking and compensation. But you can also unplug if so desired. Golds are the heaviest duty drives around, with a MTBF of 2.5 million hours, and full 5 yr warranty.

Seems like the sale is still on, but at $399 now. With your $10 coupon makes these $389 + tax, which is a great deal

I am in the market for 4 TB hard drives and thought I'd browse Mike's site. Does anyone else find the prices NOT that competitive?

I'm not sure about 4TB drives. For 10TB drives these are really good in terms of $/TB. I'd appreciate if anyone could find lower for 10TB. These also come with a 5-year warranty and are meant to be used heavily.

Thanks OP, in for one, the drives sound great, the feedback on the store not so much, hopefully I don't have any issues.

if anyone bought this drive, how long does it take the format it? and I'm, not talking about a quick format, a regular format lolll.

this is more for nas systems.. enterprise level

This is typically something that you can calculate, *roughly.

10(TB) * 1024 *1024 / <Average read or write speed between the outer and inner platter area: Think it's around 160MB/s> / 60 / 60

e.g. For me, a 3TB drive, with around 150MB/s read/write speed:
3 * 1024 * 1024 / 150 / 60 /60
Comes to about 5.8 hours. That was fairly true to me as all 6 of the 3TB drives finished formatting between 5h42m and 5h51m.

Why?

Did you want to stress test the drive to make sure everything is okay? If you want that, its gong to take days. I dont recall the exact number but my 4TB WD REDs took about 18 hours to run through all the tests before putting into my NAS.
