Didn't see that one coming. The owner obviously knew that he was going to do that. What a crook! He should get jail time for that! As bad as Enron.![]()

They're probably living like fat cats somewhere with the cash that they "stole" from innocent people.

UpCountry has closed and gone out of business. I was there on Tuesday of last week and their suppliers were literally removing all of their furniture from the store and all the employees told us that as of tomorrow (Wednesday of last week) the doors would be locked and they'd be out of work. Well, sure enough their website is down, their phone is disconnected and a ton of people have been screwed. Unfortunately I was one of them, though I should get my $$$ back through my credit card.

There's actually a pretty good article on the whole situation in the Toronto Star from October 13th. Basically the owner of UpCountry admitted to being too optimistic with business by opening two suburban stores while dumping a ton of $$$ into the new downtown store. I've filed a claim with my CC company and should hopefully get all of my money back. Also, their primary distributor is 'helping' those stranded by this situation by offered to sell them the pieces they're waiting on at their wholesale price.

For sort of modern but more traditional furniture....
If you are willing to travel to Buffalo, New York, I would suggest Value City Furniture.
You do have to bring it over yourself in a UHaul and pay Canadian duties - however the prices are shocking. Thousands and thousands of dollars less. Example, a sofa here that retailed for $5,000 - same brand same model name - Leather English Pub and oversized we paid $900 dollars for there. No joke. All wood bedroom set with Queen Sleigh Bed, huge dresser with mirror, armoire and end table - entire set in a cherry stain (remember all wood) $1,400.00. All wood dining room sets for like $700 and $800 dollars (4 chairs.) All the furniture in Extreme Home Makeover is a line they actually carry!!
Also in Hamilton Ashley Furniture, though I prefer Value City Furniture. Better prices and selection, but if you are not willing to move it yourself, then they are a good place for class on a budget.
I hate the Brick and Leon's, their stuff is cheap junk and overpriced if you ask me and you get WAY better furniture in Buffalo for a fraction of the price.

I looked at the prices and the couches at vcf and they look awesome...in all my searches i havent found couches that look this good and for that price.
Question of the day is....if i were to rent a uhaul and pick up a couch...am i paying taxes and duties on it????????????? and the cost of km's that uhaul charges would end up making this couch cost a lot more...which doesnt make sense...any suggestions?Last edited by rs77; Jan 22nd, 2008 at 06:53 PM.

Great sites!
Love this thread!! Thanks for all the great info.
Try www.bermex.ca to design your own furniture
and also www.allyourfurniture.com - Its an American website I believe, but lists GTA stores. You can do one big search and see if something you like is available in the GTA.
Keep 'em coming!

Hillside furniture in suburban Detroit (Bloomfield Hills) has a good selection of ultra modern furniture. Unfortunately they don't put prices on their website, you either have to email, phone or visit the store.. They'll probably give a discount if you're picking up .
http://www.hillsidefurniture.com/furniture_/bars.html
I've priced furniture in Detroit area versus Toronto modern furniture stores and more often than not Toronto prices are roughly the same and sometimes cheaper on exactly the same item.
If you're looking for cheap furniture then you'd go to Art Van etc and they're along the lines of the Leons_______________
