The student residence just north of the chinatown gates were a pretty good deal..I think it was $57 a night. New and clean, has a mini fridge and range.

.
go to the university of quebec, or whatever its called. from 35 bucks a room. they don't check. you can cram in like 5 people in there. the rooms are great. you get a kitchen too. also a phone. Parking is cheap too. the underground was like 20 bucks or something for three days (not 20 bucks for a night like here in toronto)

Labour Day Weekend
I just went on priceline.com today and got a booking at the Hyatt Regency in Montreal for that labour day weekend, I got it for a lot higher than the other person though, at $80US/night! Bidding $50US for 3 stars hotel didn't work for me for the past few days so...but hopefully its a good hotel! Seems like it! Valet Parking is $23CAN/day tho! If you book early, you should confirm with the Hyatt and you have dibs on high or low storey rooms.

Priceline is good but there's no guarantee you will get the hotel you want through the Name your Price program. Your winning bid might land you at the econolodge instead of the hyatt.
