I got scammed
Well, too bad I have not read these posts before. I got hooked up by this b...ards. These salespersons have no codes. While I was away, they knock at my door, my wife answered (bad idea) they said they were from water tank company and they were checking tanks in the neighbourhood, so she believed they were from our former rental company (Direct Energy) so she let them in. They told her that our tank was old (FALSE!!!! we had a 2010 tank rental with Direct Energy and no contract!!!) and needed to be replaced so she needed to sign some papers. She believed them, so she signed!!! Now I'm hooked in a 10 years agreement, which of course the guy didn't mention. What's worst is that he said we will not notice any difference in our bill, but their rental rate is higher already. F....k

What's worst, is they made her sign a "certificate of completion" form that reads: "Customer agrees to be irrebocably bound to the terms of the rental contract (Agreement) upon commencement of installation of the equipment and in connection herewith waives reliance to any applicable consumer protection legislation" What???? Is this wording even legal???
I have not called them, but I will soon to see what they say, I will post back soon.
I don't understand how these kind of "companies" are allowed to exist!!!Last edited by trevinasus; Oct 12th, 2011 at 01:32 PM. Reason: additional information

First things first. You should be ashame for working for this company, unless you have no codes...
>>It is completely your choice on whether you choose to switch companies or stay with the current provider. no one can force you into changing your provider.<<
Yes, but when some of your sales agents come knocking at the door representing themselves as if they were from another company, you are misleading people into making a wrong decision. Also your sales representatives should let the potential customer know that they will have to sign a 10 years contract. Finally, when one have a new tank that needs no replacement, they should go away, but no instead they choose to lie people about the age of the tank and rush them to sign an infamous contract.
>>3.Myth: Direct energy does not have contracts with you for your water heater. ANS: you have a contract for 5 years.<<
Well, they indeed don't have contracts. That's why you send Sales Representatives to replace existing tanks!!! Now my question to you is why MorEnergy needs contracts if they consider themselves a serious company?? What's worst, why you need a 10 years contract and not a 5 one?
>>I'm not sure why people are so loyal to Direct Energy<<
People are not loyal to them, it's just that they don't try to scam us like your company does.Last edited by trevinasus; Oct 13th, 2011 at 10:24 AM.

Hi there - when did the tank get installed? You have 10 days by the consumer protection act to ABSOLUTELY have the tank removed and demad that the old one be put back. You need to call back and tell them you are excercising your cancellation right under the Consumer Protection Act - and actually this is a right you cannot legally waive. This will be a problem for Mor since your tank has now been returned to Direct Energy's to warehouse and it will not be found. The only way that they can rectify the situation is by having Direct Energy give you a brand new tank. But you don't want to pay brand new prices. So what you can do is call DE, tell them MorEnergy has given you a new tank but you would prefer to have your old tank at your old rate, if they won't give you your old rate just tell them fine, you'll stick with Mor or go with someone else. They will play ball because they want your business. Have DE remove the Mor tank and leave it on your lawn or driveway. Call Mor and tell them they have 30 days to pick up their tank or you will be throwing it in the trash. Once you call Mor lodge the complaint with the ministry of consumer services, 416-326-8800 so it's on file.
Good Luck!

The wording of the legislation is that you have 10 days from the time you receive your copy of the contract to cancel. If morEnergy hasn't given you a copy of the contract call them and tell them to send it to you. Record dates of these occurrences. Upon receipt call them and cancel as described above.

These guys just came to my door, and my dad signed a contract with a horrible 120 month term. He had a white hard hat, reflective vest, and was carrying a clipboard with some papers that said Enbridge on them. My dad told me he was getting a free water heater upgrade, something smelled fishy at this point. I called back the customer service, and the second I said I wanted to cancel this contract the guy went off on a rant about how Direct Energy is a horrible English company based in Britain and if I would like to give my money to England instead of a Canadian company go ahead. He carried on repeating this same story over a couple times till I had to cut em off, then he asked for my address and said cancelled bye. I felt it was just a shrug off and he didn't actually write anything down at all since over the phone, they usually ask me to repeat and spell my street name. Tomorrow is the scheduled installation date, I told my dad to refused delivery and not to sign anything or let them in. Now I'm in the process of sending a cancellation letter via registered mail to them, along with a fax of it. Probably a good idea for me to call the Ministry of Consumer Services tomorrow too? I head these fee's can hit pretty hard if not properly cancelled, so I want to be extra cautious. Should I also send a copy of it registered mail to myself as well?

I'm glad you figured this out in time and make sure your dad doesn't get strongarmed into letting these creeps into the house tomorrow and they will try. They got my son and his gf on this scam but luckily they figured it out before it was too late, although not before the crooks installed the tank AND forged his signature. They tried to say that they will come and remove the tank but he said no way you are coming into my home and tyvm for the free water tank. He's not heard from them since and this was back in July I think. They are crooks. No doubt about it.

questionable water heater rental tactics in Scarborough
Representatives from Ontario Consumers Home Services are going door-to-door in Scarborough, claiming to have been sent by "the energy company" to inspect your water heater and arrange an energy-efficient replacement.
Don't mistake them for service representatives from your present water heater rental company. They don't mind if you believe that you are just getting a normally scheduled water heater upgrade, with attendant routine paperwork.
In fact, they are trying to get you to switch companies and sign a 10-year rental contract from them for a new water heater. They do not voluntarily provide this information, but if you ask them directly they will acknowledge it.
They will encourage you to make a fast decision because the installers are standing by in the neighbourhood. If you do allow them to quickly install a water heater, things become more complicated if within 10 days you decide to exercise your right to cancel the contract.
The contract requires you to pay even if maintenance services are not provided, relieves the company of liability in case of damage to your property from equipment failure, and even gives you the opportunity to allow them direct access to your bank account.
The contract also allows them to increase rental fees by 10% annually. At this rate, after 10 years you will have paid about $3300 for a 50-gallon water heater that can be purchased and installed today for about $1000.
Be fully aware of who you are dealing with if these guys knock on your door, and make sure your most trusting family members, such as spouses and elders, are alert as well.

just a quick message before i read through this whole thread..
i got an interview today for ontario consumers home services for inbound customer service rep.. would i be wrong to assume the calls for call centre work?
instead im told that the job is for door to door sales.. and for my 2nd "interview" it would be a full day of non-paid job shadowing
i told the interviewer that i wasnt really suited for door to door sales and prefer call centre work (as i thought i was applying for) and im told that i need to do 'entry level' door to door sales before i can be considered for a position in their call centre.
the alarm in my head is going off
i checked enbridgegas.com and this company is listed, i also called enbridge and they say they are a billing company... this means nothing to me
i do need a job but i do not want to sell stuff door to door, especially after finding this thread and reading that article in the star
can anyone chime in on my situation?
i've called ahead to cancel my '2nd interview'/job shadow but would like to know more
