motel/hotel near GM place
I'm trying to help a friend find a place to stay near GM place. It's just for a night and doesn't have to be too fancy. Any recommendations? Thanks.

If he's willing to take the skytrain then he can skytrain to Burrard and there are a whole bunch of hotels there that he can stay at

Sandman Inn next to the Shark Club.
Or he can try bidding on priceline using 85-105 for a 3/4* in downtown.

if you can make it one train stop away, main st station, there's a couple of hostels there. i can't remember the name, but at the bottom, there's a place called the ivanho pub. it's actually pretty walkable to GM place
can't comment on the quality of the hostels though...

WOW....They must have jacked their rates because it's summer. Nice place, but not worth the $179.

I've passed by Ivanho tons of times. I don't know what type of person the OP's friend is... but that place seems pretty bad. Even when I'm walking, I walk on the otherside of the street to avoid that place.
There are tons of relatively affordable mainstream hotels in downtown near GM place if he doesn't mind walking a little bit....There's a Ramada Inn on Pender street (10min walk), a Delta on Hastings (~12min) across the Harbour Centre revolving restaurant, and a few further into downtown, like Days Inn (20+min walk)

The YWCA Hotel on Robson/Beatty.
It's right there, couldn't get more convenient. I've stayed there twice and had great experiences both times. Both times I've gone with the hall bath to save money and had no problems. As well, they happily gave me a student discount. I paid around $60 per night, total, for a single.
Big concerts were on during nights I was there, but there wasn't any noise, even with the window facing the stadium.
Plus, the money goes to a good cause. Great place. Men are welcome, BTW, as are families, etc.
