If you're just looking for a beater bike, I would checkout Costco. Pretty cheap, doesn't hurt when it gets damaged or possibly stolen (this is a big problem in Toronto).
A decent basic mountain bike will cost you just over your price range.
If you want to find out a bit, walk into any real bike shop and ask - Cycle Path, Duke's, Urbane Cyclist, etc...

Mountain Bike
Hey Guys and Gals,
I've been looking around for a mountain bike. But, I have no clue whats good and whats just plainly over priced. Do you know of any good reliable companies or websites that explains on pro and cons of certain types of mountain bikes? Also, I was looking in the range of $200-$500.
I'm in the Toronto area.
Thanks alot.
