The OP is looking for a deal from Telus and he should call in and go through the prompts to cancel. Then don't accept their first offer.
So you're saying it's a good idea for me to call in now and inquire about not renewing? I was planning on to wait until March 1

In any case, I definitely need a new phone. I might stick with BlackBerry since my girlfriend wants BBM so much.
Hopefully my current plan can transfer to HSPA easily because I have a very old grandfathered plan already.
You should be able to keep your existing plan if you are willing to pay the status quo.
Moving to HSPA should not affect that.
The problem with switching to a new carrier is that you will lose all your tenure at Telus and as far as Rogers or Bell is concerned, you're a new customer and don't deserve special treatment.

status quo = more than what I'm paying now?
And yeah. I was planning to go to Mobilicity/Koodo/Wind if I were to leave Telus

With Wind, for $33/mo (including taxes), I get:
- Unlimited calls any time of the day, basically anywhere in the GTA (not sure where OP is)
- Unlimited SMS
- Unlimited data
- Unlimited Wind-to-Wind anywhere Wind has coverage
- Caller ID, voicemail, call waiting, etc
I believe this was a promotion, an equivalent plan now would cost almost $40, which I believe still beats the big 3.
I mean, if you have reception on the places you go on a daily basis (and I say that because I don't get any reception at work, which isn't a dealbreaker to me because I have my work phone), I can't understand why you shouldn't go with Wind.

That plan is awesome. That's what I'm looking for. I'm in GTA as well. Hmmm...

I would talk to telus first before switching, chances are since you have been with them for a while they will be willing to accommodate your needs as long as they are reasonable. Just do not expect them to match wind, mobilicity offers. If anything I wouldn't negotiate the price of the phone, if they are willing to give it to you at advertised prices be happy with that, instead negotiate the plan, because that is where the costs add up.

Talk to Telus first but don't hesitate about switching. I am with Telus now and have been for 8 years and I've signed up 3 other users and they still haven't offered me anything good.
Loyalty doesn't mean much to Telus, everytime i call retention and try to get 500MB or 1GB of data the contract ends up being $60+ per month and I'm currently only paying $28(no data).

Long time customers don't mean anything.. It's all about revenue now.. Patience Is the key when trying to get a good 3 year contract deal!

Status Quo means what you're currently paying.
Koodo is still Telus. If you plan to go with one of the new kids. Be prepared for lousy reception and dropped calls.

So here's my attempt to get a deal today with retentions at Telus:
- 300 daytime minutes
- unlimited incoming calls
- unlimited text messaging
- free call display
- free voice mail
- free after 6pm and weekends
- 500 MB data
for $60 plus tax. I'm still not happy. Am I being realistic to think that I can get better?

Yes I would think you can get better, If anything just jot down the reference # so If you ever do give up and wouldn't mind this plan you have the # and can take It on the spot. Although be weary of the CSR and make sure EVERYTHING Is there as advertised.

Okay so I had to give in to a plan right now since my previous phone died. Here it is:
- 300 daytime minutes
- unlimited incoming calls
- unlimited text messaging
- free call display
- free voice mail
- free after 6pm and weekends
- 1 GB data
$55 plus tax. Basically it's just $5 off and extra 500 MB of data compared to what I was offered at start.
Anyway, I also have the choice of lowering that plan to $50 plus tax, but I'll lose unlimited incoming and 100 less minutes, but get my 10-fave numbers instead.

Unless you have 10 buddies you talk to a LOT just stick with the bonus 100 minutes and unlimited incoming..

That's actually a pretty good plan. I'm actually looking from switching from Wind to Telus. I've had enough with Wind and their poor reception, policies and customer service. I'd rather pay more for better service.
Is it possible that I could get plan as a new customer to Telus? Well not brand new, I used to have an account with them before I switched to Wind. I wonder if that would be taken into account?

Yeah they should still have you on their records. Tell them the exact reason why you are switching back and that you're unhappy at Wind. Let Telus know that you don't want to feel that way again. You may not get the best plans out there, but the one I just posted should easily be attainable.
