Dead pixel policy is different with different manufacturers; however, it will be difficult to trade when you have an item with only three dead pixels, unless they're in close proximity, or in the middle of the screen. Apple is pretty strict on their dead pixel policy, so here's my suggestion.
Call in and tell them that this will be a display iBook for a store, running a flash demo or movie, and that the pixels are very, very noticable. You might get lucky, but you will probably have to scream and shout. (Suggested by an Apple dealer when I complained about my 2 dead pixels - I didn't try it, just forgot about them . . . really, I don't notice at all - actually, it seems one has come back to life)
BTW, if you aren't getting and educational discount, I would buy Apple product, if possible, from Best Buy or FS, for this reason alone. Apple dealers do not have the best return policies.

Either that or call your credit card company. (I hope you paid by credit card)
No they're not. They set their policy. You read their policy and agree to it when buying their goods. Yeah, try to make a $1500 chargeback because they wouldn't accept a return - that'll just go by unnoticed, I'm sure.

This is exactly the reason why I bought mine at Best Buy instead of a local Mac dealer... Best Buy will take it back as per their published policy, the local Mac dealer will not.
