My project from this summer. My first ever veggie garden.

This was my first attempt at my vegetable garden. I didn't take too many pictures towards the end of the summer. Here is what I came up with. The garden is roughly 5 feet x 15 feet.

-10 Sweet 100 tomato plants
-4 Red Chilli
-4 Scotch Bonnets
-4 Harbenaros
-4 Hot Cherrys
-4 Super Chilli
-4 Hot Portugals
-2 Oriental Eggplants
-2 Strawberry bushes
-4 Oriental Basil
-4 Rosemary
-4 Garlic Chives

In June this is how everything looked.


A month later this is how it looked.


My tomato plants went a little crazy on me. I think i should have had maybe 3 or 4 tops but I had 10.

In the end I finished with well over 300 tomatos. I wanted to keep track of my peppers but after I hit over 200 I didn't keep track. With the peppers my dad made over 15 jars of hot sauce. Next year I'm going to be a lot more organized. I plan to expand the garden a bit. Maybe by another 50%.

My favorite ones were my peppers. My close friend's dad has been running a garden for over 20 years. He said that never has he ever seen pepper plants as big as mine. None were shorter than 3 feet tall. Most were roughly 4.5 feet. I had several over 5 feet tall.

I'm going to grow less tomatos next year. Going to try some squash and melons.

Ok so this is kind of gross but I have a composter that I use religiously (cuz I am a waste reduction junkie) and I had this great big squash/pumpkin plant grow out of it.. it was that light beige coloured squash that you eat but in the shape of a mini pumpkin. We ATE some of them.. and used the rest as mini jack-o-lanterns.. that's the most gardening I've done... aside when I was a kid from Warminster.

Nice work there. I wish I had that much space in the backyard. I always had terrible yield with hot petter, and sweet pepper. Always get eaten by bugs and whatnot. Did you do anything special to prevent that?

I didn't use anything special at all which is surprising. I bascially dug up the ground and used over 50 bags of top soil and manure. I just made sure to water it every day. I only used fertilizer once and that was maybe 1 month in. I think it is was because I used all fresh new soil the garden turned out so well. I'm going to start the garden earlier next time.

I did not have any problems with pests surprisingly . Only the leaves of my eggplants were eaten up. That didn't affect the output as I still got about 7 eggplants per plant.

thanks for reminding me, I have to plan my garden for next year.

gardening gives me great satisfaction. the best part is to go and grab whatever you want, all fresh and pesticide free (although tap water does have chemicals ).

Thanks for taking the time to post those, very inspiring. I only did tomatoes this year, we just moved into the house a year ago, and we had our first baby arrive in May, so even getting that done was tough!

We'll be expanding next year for sure. I have my composter set up, and will be hooking up my rain barrel to the eaves, then running a trickle line to the garden to cut out watering time.

My sister-in-law had nice melons this summer.
In fact she still has nice melons.

on the tomato plants, it helps to pluck off the suckers so they dont grow crazy all over the garden.

i put a big stake next to mine and grow them up the side and pluck all the suckers, keeps them in place and in shape.

i love growing different pepper plants. i have 3 raised beds and i find they really only grow well in the one, regardless of having the exact same soil and whatnot in them, two are even about a foot apart and they get the same exposure to the sun in the one garden they can grow 3-4 feet tall, people are always amazed at the size.
