Is my Toronto Utility bill too High?

Hi RFD,

I'm looking for your insight.

We are in a single detached home with 6 adults. A shower everyday for everyone, dishes are washed by hand and laundry is done only on the weekends during off peak times. On average about 8 loads a week, on front loading HE machine.

Here is are the details from our last bill:

Current Reading: 493.50
Previous Reading: 349.00
Consumption (119 days): 144.50 m3

144.50 m3 @3.1138 = $449.95

Summary of Services
Water $193.48
Sewer $256.47
SWM Fee $2.19
Total: $452.14

My father has been insisting for some time now that we are paying too much, that something is up.

What do you think?

Mine is roughly $100 for four months with two people.

two people,
we are in Toronto too.
we use roughly 100m3 per billing
and paid around $300 or so with garbage/sewage.

I think our washing machine is using too much water.

Sounds reasonable to me, here we are 4 people and pay similar numbers to that.

6 adults? That's pretty cheap to reasonable. Some people pay 60% of that bill with just 2 people. Besides these things don't break the bank, its crazy RFD deal buying that drops 100-1000 just like that. Water you can't do without, deals you might.

Enjoy the dishwasher too. 6 adults must make a lot of plates!

Thats roughly $110/mth which is about right for 6 adults. Just get ready to pay 8% more this year...an increase was just approved.

Have you considered a dishwasher? Dishwashers are more efficient at washing dishes than you doing it by hand.

Sounds right. Especially for that many adults.

Your showers are likely putting 150 gallons of water down the drain every day (2.5 gpm x 10 minutes x 6 showers). 4 months (120 days) = 18,000 gallons = 68 cubic meters just for showers, and that's at 10 minutes each.

So, yeah, 144.5 cubic meters sounds reasonable once you add in all the toilet flushes, dish washing, clothes washing etc.

That's $25 a month for yor hydro bill. Seems Wayyyyy too low u less you live in a condo. A house of any kind will be at least $80 a month for hydro. Def don't believe those numbers.

That would be metres, not "meters"! :D

Remember, we're talking about T.O., not somewhere south o' the border... where they misspell things quite regularly... ;)

That water consumption looks right

We are about 8 cubic metres per person a month
You are actually using less than us per person basis per month

I think your dad commenting on the bill being too high might be a subtle hint.

Thanks everyone for the replies. My dad was concerned that there might have been a problem with our meter or a leak somewhere. He spoke to some people at his work who claimed that's their bills were significantly lower which raised some concerns.

@torontotim lol. I pay my fair share so that's not an issue.
