For people who have done this in previous years. What are some common things that qualify as “non-perishable food item”

canned food is your safest bet. One year I managed to hit up Bay/College and Queen West in the same day with my donations. Double the chicken goodness!

Not worth it if you are in GVA. Huge lineups everywhere.

Has anyone donated cash? Odd question but I assume that the Food Bank would prefer $5 cash than $5 in random food. They can use the money to buy a lot more food than can be donated.

Why would you spend $5?

The downtown Ottawa location had a big line-up last time around. It looked like lots of university students.

It's a fundraiser. I like events like this when they have a sign indicating a suggested donation. Then you know if you are giving more or less than what they are expecting.

I can safely assume if someone walks up with a $0.99 can of soup the charity and/or business will loose money.

I disagree. Business are not here to lose $.

They probably write off the entire retail cost of the meal and get a huge tax break.
Then donate all the food the collected and get more tax break!

Might as well go help them and each chicken for charity :)
There's a reason why they dont just donate the meals directly to charity, this makes them look good, free advertisement and gets new people to try their food.

It will also destroy Swiss Chalet $6.50 deal and take customers away from them as it's on the same day and most wont want to eat chicken for lunch then dinner again

Is there a minimum donation required, i.e. dollar value or number of items?
