I would want it to be around $100 - $150 ($150 only if it includes a HD)
Here is what I want to mainly use it for:
- Stream Media
- Download via built in bittorrent client
- Might want to run web server for PHP or ASP
- FTP server (optional)
The 2 I can think of that are good are the WD MyBook Live 1TB for $129 and the 2TB for $159 (On Amazon.ca) and the Iomega Home Media Network Hard Drive - Cloud Edition 1TB for $119 (Dell.ca and Amazon.ca)
What do you guys recommend for a cheap solution. I know there is the DLINK DNS-320 for $99 on sale but I would have to buy a HD and that will cost atleast another $100 for 1TB, so I wanted to avoid buying another HD.
Might be too late, however you should look at the DNS-320 that goes on sale for around $80 once in a while. No drives included but does come with built-in BT, FTP, UpnP AV server, Web File Server, Ajaxplorer, etc. You can install Fonz_FunPlug (FFP) for installing more packages. One package I installed and bought is Twonky Media Server (free trial available). It streams great with all the devices in the house.

I decided i would wait for the upcoming Synology DS413 (without +).
I don't know when it will become available in the retail channels, so if anybody knows, please give this thread a bump.

Ncix currently has the Thecus N5550 on sale for $449.99. http://www.ncix.com/products/index.p...h&promoid=1088
This 5bay NAS comes with hdmi making it a nas/xbmc combo box. Seems like a pretty good deal. Anyone have any experience with 1080p playback with this NAS?
I was looking at getting a separate NAS (Synology ds411j $369) and HTPC (Acer RL70 $340), but at the price of the Thecus I might have to go that route instead.
Thoughts?

The reviews (hardly any) are very good but it seems this model has really immature and buggy firmware: http://forum.thecus.com/viewforum.php?f=65
I was considering buying this unit but I think I'll pay a couple hundred more and go with Synology. Not in the mood to troubleshoot appliances.

Anyone has any experience with Zyxel nsa-325? It seems to be pretty nice unit for the price and I'm thinking it's better deal than Synology ds212j.

How many devices (i.e. TVs, tablets etc..) will need to stream simultaneously?
I started with a set up that comprised a synology ds212j + atv2. It played 720p fine. However, my real gripe came in the download performance of the ds212j. The native synology download station is light and quick enough to max my 28mbps connection for NZB files. However, the download performance wasn't as good after I installed sickbeard and sabnzbd. Since those programs were taxing on the ds212j, it downloaded at maybe 1-1.5 MB/s (whereas 28mbps = 3.5 MB/s). Additionally, the ds212j did an adequate job of reparing/extracting files but it was pretty slow doing it - especially if it was busy doing other things like downloading the next file in your queue. Again, I suppose this doesn't matter much if time isn't of the essence.. but hey.. why are you paying for a 28 mbps connection if you're not really using it?!
I've recently switched to putting a full desktop (AMD A8, 2TB HD) next to my tv as a htpc. It is is overkill for my needs. But... it's pretty cool that everything runs fast on it. I also went with a full desktop because:
1. I just wanted it to work. So many of the HTPC solutions (e.g. AIOS, zotac) may end up being underpowered that I was willing to spend a bit more to make sure that it would work. I wanted it to be able to max my connection when necessary and to repair/unpack files efficiently. And by spending a bit more, I was able to get Win7 and a 2TB HD; whereas a lot of the netboxes are barebones and don't come with an OS or a hard drive.
2. If I want to upgrade it later.. it'll be easy to. With a full desktop tower, I'll have space inside to add a HD, which the netboxes or mini-pc's don't have. Or I can use the USB 3.0 for an external.
Given your budget, you might be able to find a desktop tower between $400-600 that can easily work for you. If you are looking to use the NAS as a file server for many devices, a desktop may or may not be the way to go...

Synology DS413 was just released. I know Canada Computers & Newegg carry Synology, I hope it comes out at a reasonable price.

Best deal I found for the Synology DS413 at the moment is computervalley.ca at 504.99$. Most sites either don't show it yet or are at about 538-550$.
