what might be interesting for some will be these 2 new products friendlyelec that are coming so maybe worth the wait.

this is the photo of the sata hat they are soon releasing for the nanopi m4 and neo4.

With omv thats going to be quite a full feature nas.

I think the neo 4 with a "sata hat" would be a great way to gut and mod old slow nas boxes like the dns 323 or, usb dual or 4 bay enclosures into full fledged standalone nas servers at even a lower power consumption than any pc and with full usb 3.0 capable backup options.

The 918+ is $659 now on eBay newegg:
https://www.ebay.com/itm/Synology-4-bay ... 2792283331

Not the best price ever, but pretty warm for anyone who has been eyeing for one.
I bought this a couple months ago, and can't say enough praise for this NAS. I like how simple it was to set up the openVPN and automatic torrents.

What size do you need?

WD Reds.

Red Pro or Gold for the faster speed.

wd red if you need it quieter. pro/gold/seagate if you don't mind more noise and a bit faster.

is red pro louder than just a red?

is added speed necessary at all for home use?

yes the 7200rpm drives are louder. if you have your nas in another room then it shouldn't matter. Have my 918+ filled with 6tb reds on my desk and it is much quieter then the HGST drives i used to have that drove me crazy with their noise.

If you copy large files very often you'll notice it being a bit slower. for general file access/music/movie watching there is no noticeable difference.

Why is the 918+ so much more expensive than the 418. They're both 4 bays.

The biggest difference is the CPU (Realtek vs Celeron). One supports Plex media transcoding. The other doesn't.

Plus more RAM support.

The Plus series lets you run Docker, if that is something you want to do.

Useful for running containers of your software and vms.

Thank you guys. I live in a condo with a desktop and 2 laptops, tablets, and phones. Would the 918+ be overkill?

What is plex media transcoding and docker?

The 918+ and 418play support Plex and celeron CPUs.
The 418j and 418 (which are significantly cheaper) are not listed, with Realtek CPUs.

What is the purpose?

Are you storing photos or trying to use it as a media server?

If the latter, how are you getting the media? That would answer your question about what Docker is used for.
