I've got some major withdrawal going on here, watched testing at Daytona but that's about it. Anxiously awaiting the race season.

Nascar fantasy team......anyone?
So here I am again on my yearly visit to the sports forum. Just wondering if anyone has a Nascar fantasy team. If you do and want to join a smaller team competition I have a group for you ......there are only 4 members as of right now. We play at Yahoo sports.

You must have looked hard to find this post another week and it is a year old. I was just getting ready to post it again. I do not have Speed channel because I do not watch tv except for the races but to keep me up to date I have free satilite radio in my Ford Ranger. Channel 90 is NASCAR 7/24. You should checkout Yahoo Fantasy teams. Last year I finished in the top 97% but was still 6400 out of first place of all players. You can take a look at it here.... http://sports.yahoo.com/nascar;_ylt=...jCycdOQVC5bZ8u Once you join you can also join smaller groups if you want. If interested in a small group let me know and I will get you the password for our group. Last year there were 4 of us and 2 have rejoined for this season so far. It takes about an hour each week to pick your drivers for the next weekend and it has to be done before qualifing usually Friday. If you miss qualifing then the drivers you used last week will be on your roster for the next race but you can swap them from staters to the bench as long as you do it 5 minutes before the race starts.
Quick rules rundown:
Pick 8 drivers from 3 groups.....2 from group A.....4 from group B.....2 from group C. Group A are drivers that were in the chase last year. Group B are non chasers and potential winners. Group C are start and parkers, rookies and non race winners.
Half of your drivers from each group will be starters and the others are on the bench. All drivers are eligable for qualifing points but only starters get race points. No driver can start more than 9 races of the season.
Hope I did not bore you or chase you away with my long winded reply.

That's ok with the long winded reply. Unfortunately I don't think there's Nascar fans here
and I don't have the time to research to make intelligent choices for a fantasy team. Maybe one day....hope to travel and follow the circuit a bit.
We're heading off to the Vegas race again in March, it's become home base for us and the cheapest to fly out and stay there. I am sooo looking forward to getting away again, our last trip was the Indy there and we all know how that ended.
Good end to last year, #14 fought the whole race FTW. Danica will be a marketing machine for him and #88, not that #88 needs it. I've started following twitter a bit, some good info on there as most drivers are on. (Hate facebook so I don't use it.)
You must go to a race one day although the amount of people there is always a battle. I've heard some people talking and it took 6 hrs. to get out of Daytona.....we take the shuttle bus in Vegas and on race day it takes 1 hr to get out and back on the strip. Not bad at all. I'll let you know how it goes, LVMS is pretty organized now and we sit high enough not to have view obstructed by banking.

Sorry you do not have the time to join us. But I hope your trip to LVMS is all you hope it will be. I retired last may and maybe now I might have the time to go to a race but it is unlikely because I hate to travel. I seem to have no desire at all to do that to the point that I totally teed off the mother-in-law once for turnimg down an all expence paid trip to Scotland. Imagine how teed off she was being a Scot that was mad because someone refused to take her money. My favorite Scottish joke:
The Arab and the Scotsman
An Arab Sheik was admitted to St Vincent's Hospital for heart surgery,
but prior to the surgery, the doctors needed to store his blood in case
the need arises.
As the gentleman had a rare type of blood, it
couldn't be found locally, so, the call went out to all the
states.
Finally a Scot was located who had a similar blood type.
The Scot willingly donated his blood for the Arab. After the
surgery, the Arab sent the Scotsman as appreciation for giving
his blood, a new BMW, diamonds & US dollars.
A couple of days
later, once again, the Arab had to go through a corrective
surgery.
His doctor telephoned the Scotsman who was more than
happy to donate his blood again. After the second surgery, the
Arab sent the Scotsman a thank-you card & a jar of candies.
The Scotsman was shocked that the Arab this time did not reciprocate
his kind gesture as he had anticipated. He phoned the Arab &
asked him: "I thought you would be generous again, that you
would give me a BMW, diamonds & money... But you only gave me a
thank-you card & a jar of candies".
To this the Arab replied:
"Aye, but I now have Scottish blood in me veins."

Haha, good joke. I'm not much of a traveler either, I can't say I blame you for not taking the trip but ticking off the mother-in-law is whole different issue.
Congrats on your retirement, sitting in your lazy boy, remote control in each hand, not a bad situation to be in. You actually miss alot when you're at a race but the getaway is nice. I figure we might as well go now while we can before medical insurance costs $$$$$$ to go to the US. I can't believe our neighbors, they're almost 80 and they go for 2 months to Arizona every year. No medical insurance! Insane.

Wow, I had major panic set in watching #24 nudge #18 and #24 not being able to save it. Brought back some ugly memories. Glad he was okay!!
I don't know if you watched Apprentice but Michael Andretti filled in for Marco, must have been filmed soon after Vegas. Did I tell you I met and got photo's/autos with Chip Ganassi, Mario Andretti, TK, the winner of the Indy Lights and others....those guys are just so visible and accessible. Chip was just leaning on a trailer taking in some shade...Saw Michael Waltrip on the strip and talked to him, he's one big dude, especially compared to Danica.
Less than week til liftoff....or more appropriately, "boogity, boogity, boogity!"Last edited by gorf; Feb 21st, 2012 at 12:33 AM.

No you did not tell me any of that but I assume it was in Vegas. Two more races before Boogity boogity boogity. The Gatorade duels on Thursday to set qualifiying. Good to see the pack racing back. Not due to the big one but it is better racing than watching them streched out. I am also a fan of the double restart because it means the dude five rows back still has a chance as opposed to him a half mile back on a 1.5 mile track. I am waiting til after the Gatorade duels to make my selections for Sunday. But so far I have Gordon, Newman, Ernhardt and Ragan as starters. That will likely change before the race. Seems to be a lot of open wheel drivers moving to Nascar.

Yes it was the Indy in Vegas.
What a wild Daytona weekend. I haven't seen so much fire ever in a Nascar race, thank goodness everyone ok, some pretty hard crashes. I would have liked to see Dale Jr. win this one. I like pack racing also but if one driver gets loose, he/she can take out alot of cars, totally disappointed Jimmie was taken out at the beginning of the race. I find it amazing how one can escape by a split second though.
I'm really looking forward to getting away, the crowd doesn't thrill me though as it's always packed and 3 days pounding the pavement at the track does a number on the old body. It can be a fairly long walk just from where the bus drops you off to the gates to get in. But the rush starts when the fighter jets fly over and you hear the famous words in motorsports.........

Kick my but twice then turn me around and do it again. Because of the first rain delay last chance to arrange my starters for the race was left open till Monday morning. When I went to bed Saturday night I had Edwards, Earnhardt. Biffle and Stenhouse. Then in my infinite wisdom I dropped Earnhardt and Edwards and picked Newman and Stewart. I ended up with 268 points and had I left it alone I would have had close to 300. The top player this week got 360 points so I am now 92 points behind the top dog and 80 points out of the top 50 list. Oh well 1 down and 35 to go. As for my group I am smack in the middle 6 behind first and 6 ahead of last place.
I think Jimmie is going to have a hard season this year. He just lost Chad for 6 races for playing with the aerodynamics on the C-posts. He altered them to take the air away from the spoiler giving less downforce but faster speed. I also think that this season will be Earnhardt's comeback year. I do believe that the old man getting killed and the breakup of the family had a lot to do with his performance the last few years.
Anyway enjoy yourself at the track and tell me how it went when you get back. Almost wish I was going along with you. I am concidering a bus trip to Michigan, maybe, but then I would have to apply for a passport.
Dave
PS Just heard that Jimmie was also docked 25 points. Since he only got 2 points for the Daytona race he is now 23 in the hole with everyone else on the plus side. Going to be a long season for him.Last edited by Rembrandt100; Mar 1st, 2012 at 01:38 AM.

Ahhh, too bad about the change, who knows with Daytona though. I never would have thought Jimmie would have been taken out on lap 2. I heard but don't know if it's true, that Nascar just did a visual, they didn't actually take measurements. We'll see how the appeal goes, hopefully no decision is made until after the LV race if the decision stands, I'd like to see Chad there. That's one hell of a harsh penalty for the team.
Yes I'll get back to you, the weather was initially supposed to be showers for Friday/Saturday but now the weekend looks really good. We're going to the track for the 3 days, we met some people from Texas who we meet up with so we're looking forward to seeing them also. It's kinda strange getting an email from them asking how y'all are doing....lol Wonderful people and we have alot of fun together and sit close by each others. The weekend will be long and hard, we usually get to the track early, I try and get some good photo's but it takes me a while to figure that out again because of the speed of the cars. lol...
If you get a chance to go, I think you'd enjoy it, it would be worth getting a passport or you could tryout the Nationwide in Montreal. Not all the popular drivers are there but you'd get a feel for whether it would be worth getting a passport and seeing a Sprint Cup race. I guess I'll get back to you in a couple of weeks, I'm soooo looking forward just to get away even with the hassle at the airport (seems like they like to single me out) and the packing.

Sorry about my late response, I've just been so darn busy plus it took me a couple of weeks to recoup because actually we both came home sick. That means we had a good time right?

The race was awesome, the atmosphere, just being at the track is so cool. Sunday we had pitlane passes and I ventured into places where I shouldn't be going. Security protects the drivers and cars pretty carefully and I was constantly being told to get behind the white line. I was in there like a dirty shirt, I didn't care, when the race was about to start, security literally watched me leave...I had a blast. Now this is totally different to the Indy race we went to last fall, we were pretty much allowed to go anywhere we wanted.
Taking a picture of a car at 200 mph is hell for me but finally got some good shots. Rutledge, Hermie, Kyle P, and John Roberts did an autograph session and we happened to be at the speed stage so we waited for them. What a bunch of nice dudes, Kyle P and Rutledge especially, spent time talking, very cool.
On the track, me being in there like a dirty shirt and unaware of the time, I got to stand right behind #48 during the anthem, got some great shots of him and Chad. You know the anthem, no one moves so they left us alone. lol..Also as I was being punted, I stopped and got good shots of #48, #20, #14 in their cars. I didn't see Dale Jr. at all, he still has the biggest following. My husband is a little more respectful to security, this time I just went for it. lol
Zoomed in on a pic of myself that was taken and I had black spots on my face, brake dust, rubber? Not bad....
It's a great experience and we really enjoy it. A dude my husband works with was also there Saturday and Sunday but he was hungover as hell on Saturday and appeared not to have much fun. He didn't have a pit pass on Sunday either so he missed out on alot of fun I think....we just enjoy the moment, the prerace and the race. Had a blast and ready to go back. Too bad the Indy isn't there in the fall but LVMS is giving Sprint ticket holders free tickets to the truck race, we might go but the truck race is no big deal. Not as many sponsors etc...we'll see.
Interesting developments with #48's appeal. I've been so darn busy since we got back that I really haven't been watching neither Indy nor Nascar closely. I think overall, the experience is alot of fun but you miss alot but I don't care. Just being there is a rush. If you ever decide to go, make sure you don't come home on Monday just incase of rainout, someone my husband works with went to Daytona and they had to leave on Monday so they missed the race, what a letdown! It was a Christmas gift from the wife to the husband too.

Do not worry about the turn around time on your replies. I am so happy that you are enjoying going to the races and are really into it. It sounds like you had Christmas all over again. None of my friends are even into sitting still for one race never mind talking about it. To tell the truth whenever there is a rain delay I think about the people that are there and not only paid for tickets but hotels, at double the normal rate, and transportation and food, and missing a days work if they stay over. Then the logistics at the airport to get home. If I were you and was there I would go to the truck race, can not think of why not since the tickets are free. (There is that Scottish mother in law again!) I think the only reason that I am not that interested in it is because I do not see it regularly. Same with Nationwide races.
There is only you and the 2 guys I play against on one fantasy team and one lives in S. Cal. and the other in Nevada. I also joined a larger group this year and working my way to the top. I still only get to pick one team for the upcoming race but it applies to both groups. Just as a point of interest until I read the last line of the third paragraph above, I had no idea that I was talking to a lady.
I do not think I will be using the sat radio after the free deal runs out. You do hear a few things of interest but it is mostly all pro Nascar by some of the deejays and I am only in the truck for half an hour or so. It may be a good thing tho to listen to it on the way home from my fishing camp on Sundays as they broadcast the race.
Do you ever go to the track around Toronto. I used to go to Flambourgh Raceway (near Hamilton) every Sat night but it was long ago. Last time out I went to Sunset Speedway (hwy 11 south of Stroud) It was before they made the high banked corners 3 years ago. Now it is supposed to be a little like Bristol except the 160,000 seating.
