National Benefit Authority
http://www.thenba.ca/
Anyone use or familiar with this organization?
They claim to be able to get money from CCRA and the provincial government for people with disabilities - they ask for a $25 up front application fee, and get 25% of the money they are able to obtain from the government as a result of their investigation and work on your behalf.
I have a family member with an applicable disability and am thinking about applying..
How are they different than an accountant who specializes in disabilities and the disability tax credit (DTC)?
Thanks for any info you can provide!

Just looking at that website, they have the same vibe as the payday loan companies (with large amounts of cash money pictured on the front page.)
If they really do provide a service then it's probably something you can do for yourself for free or at least a lot cheaper.
They come across as really sleazy, and I would stay away from them on that basis alone.

National Benefits Authority scam
This is a sneaky bunch of people who are out to take advantage of folks who need help the most: disabled taxpayers who are desperate for money. They charge up to 30% of whatever money they get for you, whereas any competent accountant or H&R Block office can do the same for you for a fee of probably less than $100.00. REMEMBER, these people are only getting money back for you that you have already paid in income taxes. If you are low-income and do not pay income taxes, they will get you nothing.
I really hope somebody sues the butts off these people!

Not a scam
They have a partnership with Manulife Financial. They are likely the largest benefit provider in Canada. My employer uses them as well as my previous employer. They advertise on 680 news and they are not listed anywhere on the CRA site. The CRA doesn't want you to know about theses guys. They would if it was a scam. What is the scam? I will gladly pay 25$. They say i am eligible to receive funds. It's found money and i am fine with the 30% they take. The way I see it they want as much as they can get. So do I.

you will get money, some or most of the people who deal with them don't know or will find out that it is done unethically and potentially illegally. don't fall for the trap, DO IT YOURSELF or get h&r block to do it. you will save money and when the company gets investigated, you won't have to give your money back.
cheers

Not exactly a scam, but, why would you pay 30% for them to do something you can do yourself? If you are eligible for things like the DTC you don't need them to do it for you.
1. Download DTC form from CRA website.
2. Take to doctor
3. Have doctor fill out form
4. Mail to CRA

Once upon a time, I worked for CRA. Do as ghostryder says. It works, and you get to keep your 30%. If you can't be bothered to take the 1/2 hour or whatever for your doctor's visit, that's a bigger problem.
You may also open up a bigger can of worms if you have to sign over POA on your tax credits... the last thing I want is someone who can file on my behalf in the future. If you don't know how to do this in the beginning, it can be difficult to remove the POA on your taxes later.
I wouldn't touch this. Follow ghostryder's advice. Hire an accountant. Or look at the volunteer program through CRA if you qualify. http://www.cra-arc.gc.ca/tx/ndvdls/vlntr/nd-eng.html

Because(I) don't want to be unethical. They can do what they do, as long as they do what they say. Like I said it is found money I otherwise wouldn't file for because I hate dealing with the government for anything. I feel the nba would have an advantage being a corporation.

What's unethical? To qualify for the Disability credit you have to have the form filled out by a doctor. Then you send it to CRA. They are not going to be able to do anything different.
Years ago my sister was hit by a car and permanently disabled. I downloaded the form, she took it to her doctor, doctor filled it out for free, she sent it to CRA. Disability Credit approved. Done. Cost? One stamp, some paper, drive to doctor's office.
If your income tax return is so simple all you have is one T4 slip and nothing else and your income is really low, sure you can go to Hose & Rip Block and pay them to do your return. Or you could get it done by the Community Volunteer Income Tax Program for free. Or you could do it yourself, for free.

Do not go near that company
Canadians beware...this company is run by crooks...do not believe their website or their lies...they will ask you for level 2 authorization to look at all you tax information...that means everything about you and your previous tax information.
Go to an accountant...they will do it for about $60, Revenue does the rest, all the calculations.
An accountant will NOT need to look at previous tax returns...Revenue Canada will do that.
No accountant or tax preparer has CONTACTS at Revenue Canada...If you are not afraid....Revenue Canada makes it very easy to do yourself...you can get the form at the Revenue Canada website...just seach Disability Tax Credit.
Print the form and get your doctor to fill in his part and mail it to Revenue Canada.
Do not get caught up with this company...Revenue Canada does all the work.
FOR ANYONE WHO HAS BEEN SCAMMED BY THEM...PLEASE CONTACT ME AND WE CAN START A CLASS ACTION LAWSUIT.
I am having a lot of trouble with them since I found out that they lie on their website.
I need people to help me fight them...they are dangerous and have had access to all my personal information when it was NOT necessary...they only want the access to track what Revenue Canada is doing with your tax credit...AND SO THEY CAN HARRASS YOU FOR THEIR 25%. Revenue Canada NEVER corresponds with them.

Disability Tax Credit
I agree that their methods can be unscrupulous, and they charge 30% which is the highest out of all the companies that do this. They also engage in some very sketchy practices, which I won't get into detail here (on advice from my lawyer). I would go with another firm (PM me for a recommendation) or with a very good accountant.
However regarding the tax credit itself:
The Canada Revenue Agency will automatically apply the credit to you in most cases, and especially if you request by a letter or with T1 adjustments. However, there are cases when the credit has to partially transferred to more than one person. There are also cases when credits (such as spousal claims) must be removed from one person to allow transfer to a third person. In scenarios such as these, it requires year-by-year tax analysis and calculations, that CRA will not do. They will send you a letter, either saying that the claim has either been made by someone, or that someone else is making a conflicting claim.
I have much experience in this subject, having worked with personal taxes for a long time.

Scam
Hello, are you guys serious, this is a scam, who ever is on here saying the the national benefit authority is not a scam, obviously WORKS FOR THEM. the CRA is the only place
that can determine if you are eligible, and YOUR doctor is the only person who can fill out the form. So here is the option. take form to doctor, pay 35$ send form in, and get refund
if you paid tax. OR go to National Benefit, have them ask you pointless questions, have them call Canada Revenue to find out if you've paid any tax to see how much they can
take that is YOUR money, then they have you take your form to the doctor, and then the form is sent in, and Canada Revenue reviews it, and then National Benefit takes
30 percent of your maony. ALL tax credits are available online, and if you cant find it at www.cra.gc.ca, then call CRA. National Benefit Authority should have a sign outside
their door that says "hello come in if you want us to take 30 percent of your refund, or you can go do it yourself for free, since we have NO AUTHORITY to do anything with
income tax LAWS, we are just a business that wants to make money by not telling you the truth" thats a good logo for them.
