Cheapest for 8GB 480RX
I was going for this card but after seeing numerous benchmarks I noticed the gtx 1060 is faster in most of them so got one for 250$ from newegg last week and I have never been happier.
Paying full price for an item is a sin.

Umm for 250 you probably got the 3GB version... which is inferior to the 6GB version. And not just in RAM. In clock speed.

And after driver updates and Direct12 getting more popular, the RX480 is outpacing the 1060 now on many, if not a majority, of games.

This is a good deal.
I've got the MSI Gaming 8GB RX480 card.
DX12 games like Battlefield 1 look really stunning at 1080P.
If you are in Alberta you can do an online pricematch at Memory Express.

This is really what drove my decision to go to the RX 480. The when DX 12 performance is compared, it beats out the 1060. More and more games will be moving to DX12 in the near future. That and AMD have really made gains in their driver/software optimization and support.

I did the 1060 vs 480 debate myself. A lot of older benchmarks have the 1060 ahead, but AMD driver updates have really given the 480 a boost. That said, what made me choose the 480 was the extra gig of memory ( I went with 4) and the fact that FreeSync monitors are cheaper compared to their nvidia g-sync counterparts which will often run you an extra +$200.

That aside, I went with MSI and I'm a bit shaky on Gigabyte when it comes to quality + warranty, but this is a good price.

Not on high settings if you're expecting 60+ fps consistently.
Current gen video cards still struggle with 4k and you're looking at the gtx 1080 if you expect decent frame rates and high settings but that's over $800cad.
I would wait until amd Vega drops then you'll have more options.

This 480 is the 8gb version compared to your 1060 3gb. The new amd relive update makes it better than the 1060 now. You can check a video here.

From what I've read updates seem to have fixed most of the issues with this card, my biggest concern however is Gigabyte has a relatively small presence in Canada so any RMA has to be shipped to the States.

What kind of port does this plug into? I am trying to determine if this will connect to my five year old motherboard. Will this aid in handbrake video encoding?

I am currently using a gt 630, so I imagine almost any card will be an upgrade...

It would be a definite upgrade for GPU. Games are rarely bottlenecked by CPU.

It would be a huge upgrade on your system as far as gaming goes. I went from a 7850 to a 290 and it was quite substantial...this would be even better.

Good deal for an 8gb card, but this is probably the worst out of all the the third party offerings. Run's hot and can thermal throttle because of it.
