Qnap TS-231 if you want just a basic NAS.. look at their higher end models if you want one that will do on the fly video transcoding and have HDMI out to a TV. If you're just streaming to a set top box with a decoder, or your TV can already decode the files, you can stick with the basic model.

TS-231+-US is going to be $149 at Newegg US. Is this a good price? And is the HGST Desktar NAS 4TB a good hard drive for this NAS?

Yes thats a good price if the shipping/duty/taxes doesn't kill it. It's ~$266CAD right now. Should only be charged HST I'd think. How important are quiet drives to you? HGST are excellent drives but are noticably noiser than WD Red's. If you'll have it on the desk beside you, it might get annoying fast.

Yes, the HGST Desktar NAS drive are generally regarded as good drives for NAS application. Are there any BF sales on 4TB HGST NAS drives?

Performance-wise, is the HGST better than WD Reds? I saw Reds on sale too but they are 5400rpms only.

Yes - but - and its an important but - in a home NAS situation you're limited by the gigabit ethernet on your computer, so no matter what, you're only going to be able to pull 1Gbps off the filesystem, even with super fast 6Gbps drives in your NAS.

Bought the Qnap TS-231+-US and the HGST Desktar NAS 4TB this morning for US$285 at Newegg. I will the buy another drive at a later time once I recover from all my Black Friday spending. :)

Good choice and hot deal there, @jigsatics. The slightly upgraded model of that one is about to come out, so you're getting a good deal on the current one. The new one is the 231p model, which just seems to jump bump the processor up from 1.4 to 1.7ghz. With Newegg USA do you have to ship it to a friend in the states or a reshipping service?

www.dell.ca has some good deals on Synology,

416play is $549.99 http://www.dell.com/en-ca/shop/accessor ... u=A8986298
216play is $329.99 http://www.dell.com/en-ca/shop/accessor ... u=A8975456
416j is $409.99 http://www.dell.com/en-ca/shop/accessor ... u=A8943881

I can't decide between the 416j or the 416play.
"I don't even know what this is and i just ordered it... damn it rfd."
"Thanks OP. Didn't need them until RFD'ers convinced me that i did!"
