[NCIX] NCIX wkd deal: Toshiba HDKPC09 2TB $84.99

The Toshiba 3TB is a better deal for GB/$. But for people that are still uncomfortable with 3 & 4TB drives reliability, this 2TB is hot.

2 year warranty. Not exactly a stellar vote of confidence in their product!

...so you want it longer or shorter? because Western Digital Blue/Green and Seagate offers 2 years too.

If your paranoid about the hd failing, I highly recommend running a stress test. I personally use Bart’s Test Stuff. First you check the S.M.A.R.T. for reallocated sectors, which should be zero. Then you run the test, and check for reallocated sectors again. You should also keep an eye on the other values as well.

sounds like a pretty good deal, I would get the 3TB if it was a year ago when I needed it but since that time I now have everything in the cloud like 4TB cloud :D

You could also have a RAID 1 setup.

I always run at least 2x chkdsk /r on new drives and check for bad sectors. I don't have the 2TB yet, but the Toshiba 3TB completed in ~1hr. Not sure what it is doing, but that is super fast. I had Seagate, WD, Samsung 2TB drives took 6hrs to 12hrs to complete the test.

Wrong. These Toshiba drives are using Hitachi technology. When WD purchased Hitachi's storage division they were forced to sell certain assets in order for the acquisition to be completed. Toshiba purchased these assets.

these mention the sale but it doesn't say it was Hitachi's technology that was sold to Toshiba, but rather WD's. Which, seeing as this transaction was needed so WD could acquire Hitachi, seems more logical that it was WD's technology that went to Toshiba, and not Hitachi's as that wasn't theirs to sell yet.

It is rather common during a merger this large to sell off parts of the merged company in order to satisfy regulators.

The 3TB drives and i'm pretty sure the 2TB drive in this case are all rebaged HGST drives and not WD drives. Google Toshiba 3TB internal for comments like this (i.e. http://forums.ncix.com/forums/?mode=sho ... msg2560378 , http://www.amazon.com/Toshiba-DT01ACA30 ...
