b/w laser or colour (laser, injet, etc) ???
For a b/w laser, I'd go with Brother 4800 ... EXCELLENT quality, toner lasts a long time. Reasonable priced.

HP DeskJet 6540 for $99.94 at Staples. Fast + great print quality. Comes with a full set of inks. Check out the following reviews.

For a all-around good quality printer, you can't beat the Canon ip4000. $129.95 at Staples etc.
Seperate ink tanks for each colour (cyan, magenta, yellow) and two blacks (one for text, the other for photos). The large black cartridge for text consistently prints between 400-600 pages of regular prints like email etc. The photo quality is extremely good. It's fast and quiet. It has two paper trays, I use the bottom one for regular paper and the tray on top for photos when I am printing one. The printer also supports duplex printing (both sides of the paper) automatically.
The colour's are roughly $18 a piece or $49 for the three.
The photo black is $18.
The black for text is $17.
It's one of the highest rated printers on the market.
Hope that helps.
BTW - While the quality of the HP is on par with the Canon you will pay through the nose for ink even if you do just a moderate amount of printing.
