Need HDD recovery company in GTA or Ottawa

Hey, I am looking for a company that is located in either the GTA or Ottawa that can recover the data on my laptop HDD. Last summer I mistakenly put the base of an antenna on my laptop no knowing there was a magnet in the base. It physically damaged the HDD as all I hear are ticks when it spins up. I haven't turned it on since last year as I don't want to screw it up any more. I would appreciate any tips on finding a good place.

This one is located in Markham, but as Xoanan mentioned, data recovery is super expensive.

As a side note, if you try to set up the drive as a slave and windows recognizes it you may have a shot at using data recovery software to try and recover the files.

man...i know data recovery is expensive...i bet this one is gonna hurt. i stupidly didn't backup pictures from my 2 years working and travelling abroad. They are worth the recovery...but maybe when I get a quote to see how much or when i make more money. Been meaning to look into finding companies for a year now!

anybody have an approximate price? like there is quite a difference between 500 and 1000...both are expensive, but one i can certainly consider at this point. the other..maybe later on.

The price would really depend on the type and degree of damage. The amount of passed time doesn't help either. From the looks of it, the magnet has probably messed up the spindle drive or the head coil, so it would be a hardware problem which would require an identical donor drive, a clean room, and careful replacement + recalibration. The good news is, the magnetic data itself is likely undamaged (unless scratched by the heads), so most of it should be recoverable.

wait...so now that the HDD has been sitting untouched in the laptop for about 1 year my chances of recovering files are slimmer than last year? I am really really hoping that the head did not give a good scratch to the part of the drive that holds my travel pictures! (mp3s and movies i could care less about)

yea..for data recovery i know that it seems to be the going rate now. my friend did it at Bestbuy for around 600, but his was a crash and the dude doesnt really know computers so he coulda got taken for a ride. I maybe could have helped him to save some data, but I know for a fact that I can't personally do anything. But still 500-1000 is no small sum! How many hours of work will I need to do to pay for this little bit of stupidity?
