The hot is normally black so connect each to the same colour and green to ground.

Is your incoming power cable a standard 3 wire cable (black/white/bare) or is it 2 wires only (black/white)? Your original pic seems to be one of your power supply being of a 2 wire lamp cord type as opposed to a standard 3 wire NMD type cable. If so, you only have hot and neutral and no ground coming in and you should most definitely NOT be grounding either hot or neutral wires to the housing of anything let alone a metal range hood. Forgive me if this sounds basic to you but I'm concerned that you're going to electrify the housing. If you've done it - even if it works now - I would strongly recommend that you rewire it.
Again, forgive me if I'm misreading and this is really basic to you.

I'm glad it worked out ninety5teg, even though there seems to be some confusion. It really doesn't matter what colours the wires are in the fan body, but a red wire on the rough in, in coming line signifies a traveler which is more a 14/3. three way switch type line. That's a story for another day, back to the topic at hand, if you ground the hot (black wire) then you are creating a dead short and that is dangerous, hence the confusion. If in fact that's what you've done then the component won't work, hence again the confusion.
In conclusion you got it wired to work, safety we hope but we don't think you grounded the hot (black) or (white) common/neutral wire. I believe CaptSmetwick was concerned for your safety, and I would be too.Last edited by Maymybonneliveforever; Jul 13th, 2011 at 07:07 AM.

This is actually my first time wiring up a houshold item...as u can see in the pic I took and posted I have made the connections the following way:
I have no red/blue wires. 2 black wires and 1 white wire.
I bought a extension cord from Home Depot after I spoke with the Home Depot eletrician guy and told him what I needed to wire up a range hood...he told me to buy a extension cord and cut the end off and wire it up...
I cut the end off and then plugged it in to verify the positive and negative with the multimeter...I then begin wiring it by connecting the black copper colored wire from the range hood to the positive wire on the extension cord....then connected the black silver colored wire to the negative wire and also wired the white colored wire from the range hood (for the light) to the negative wire and also connected the ground wire to it and then I grounded to the green screw on the range hood chasis..the ground wire had a little cap so I put all the wires (negative, ground and the light) inside that...I then used electrical tap to secure the wires and from coming apart...
This is the multimeter I have, I manged to find a picture of it on the internet:
Thank you for the concerns, I appreciate it..if there is anything wrong with the wiring can u please inform me...
I hope I made my post is clear..
ThanksLast edited by ninety5teg; Jul 13th, 2011 at 11:17 AM.

I really don't think you want the neural wire connected to the frame. Just because it seems to work does not mean it is safe. I remember my b-in-law doing some wiring. I discovered that the circuit would only work if a certain light bulb was screwed in. Your first mistake was taking advice from a home depot clerk. That extension cord is not code for a range hood. I recall HD having a display board that had baseboard heater thermostats wired incorrectly. Some of them don't use red to red and black to black, but rather end up with a red to black. The guy setting up the display did not read the instructions on the stat.

resurrecting this thread
I just bought the NUtone hdn6430 at HD and it has the same wiring setup as your Broan (same company). For the life of me I cannot figure it out. I tried customer service both numbers they were clueless even though I told them my old one had the same setup - One white, one black silver wire and one black copper wire (my copper wire is a short wire attached to the back of the fan switch. No other coloured wires. Green ground screw.
I will post pics when I have time (going to work now) but I have tried putting both black together with the hot black from the wall, leaving black in the unit loose, and always had white going to white and the ground from the wall going to the green screw. I had the light going with both setups but not the fan.
Help!
Thanks in advance I will check back later ! (work now)
