need (network?) help please...
hey guys,
got me a lil problem.
not sure if its my router or modem or xp cd perhaps?
ive used this xp cd many many times to reinstal with no problems what so ever.
i was trying to reinstal xp pro on my comp and with the network cable connected in the NIC (pci slot) like i always do but i cannot connect to the internet anymore after xp pro is fully installed. normailly xp would finish installing and then xp would load up the drivers and everything would work.
what ive tried already:
ive changed nic's
ive changed pci slots
ive reinstalled the nic driver (through xps own driver)
ive disabled the network connection
ive enabled the network connection
ive tested that CAT line with a laptop and it works
ive install xp 3 times (thinking it was me)
ive changed to another router
ive unplugged both router and modem to reset
ive hit the reset buttons on both the modem and router
ive sone an ipconfig release
ive ipconfig renew DOESNT WORK THOUGH, says timed out, cannot find DHCP server
i also bypassed my router and plugged the CATcable from the rogers modem directly into teh nic in the pc, still nothing with the fresh install.
latest changes that might have effected it:
-i have just got my modem changed from rogers (im runnin cable) becuase my last one poooched.
-noticed a "new" screen com up just before xp has finished its instal asking me to check off OBTAIN IP AUTOMATICALLY as well as OBTAIN DNS AUTOMATICALLY (i think its DNS)...ive never seen this screen before
-when i click on the big "E" for explorer to open up, a window pops up saying that i need to create a network.
im not too good at this networking stuff but at one point was just plug and play for me as everything was always "obtained automatically". i hope the new modem doesnt have any restricions of some kind, or microsoft changed the xp setup before i could finish the install (since its just a copied version for now until i buy a new one)
any help would be great!
i cant seem to get the internet working on that install of xp after its been installed without detecting it.
thanks in advance gents!

Try doing a hard reset (pull power for 30 secs on modem) then try plugging your modem directly to your NIC. now try an ipconfig and see if your NIC has an IP address. When you try to open IE for the first time, just walk thru the type of connection you have. It will set it up, even though there's nothing to set up (wish computers could be smart
) .
If this doesn't work I'd call your ISP and have them do a line reset on the modem.

ive tried all that...i called rogers as well and they "cant do a line reset". :S
the tested it out with me and the modem works apparently, but not through the router. ive tried 4! different routers now and conviced that the modem isthe problem...sometimes it keeps me online and sometimes it doesnt.
am i missing something easy?
thanks guys
