Need opinion on this laptop
I'm thinking about getting the following laptop from Dell:
Inspiron 9400 Dual Core
Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7200 (2.00GHz, 4MB L2 Cache, 667 MHz FSB)
Genuine Windows Vista™ Home Premium
17 inch Wide Screen XGA+ Display with TrueLife™
FREE 2GB $350 Value
160GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive
8x CD/DVD burner (DVD+/-RW) with double-layer DVD+R write capability
256MB NVIDIA® GeForce™ Go 7900 GS
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery
It's going to run $1599 before taxes. Going to be mainly using it for surfing and a little gaming here and there. What do you guys think or can you recommend another better deal somewhere else. Thx in advance

If you don't mind the size & weight of it, it is a good laptop. I have a 15" of it and I sometimes wish to have a smaller one like 640m.

Yes I'll mainly be using it in my room on my desk so the size and weight is not an issue. I just wanted to know if that is a good deal or an ok deal. Thx

If it's just going to stay in your room/desk...why not get a better desktop for half the price? The desktop would be cheaper to fix and upgrade should you need too.
I don't know why people would call anything 15 inche and above a laptop...they are so...huge. Made the mistake a couple years ago getting a 15 incher...thing was hard to lug around..ended up with a 13.3 VAIO SZ340 now.

As mentioned, the Inspiron line is the consumer line, but there is nothing wrong with it. Simply put, if you want a laptop with a 7900GS or better, be prepared to pay $2500+ for it.
The 9400/e1705 is the only exception. Best bang for your buck? Hell yeah!_______________

What you could do is buy a good decent desktop for about 700-800 bucks (assuming all you need is a tower). Then get a goood decent laptop to just carry around (I assume you would do most of your heavey work such as BT and stuff on your desktop).
This is my set up now.
I have an old desktop, AMD 2500, 1gb ram with 750gb worth of drive space. I do all my BT, DVD/CD burning on it. Don't need a powerful comp to do that.
And I have a laptop to just carry around for other things like just surfing the net, MSN etc.
You don't need a 17 inche laptop to just carry to the living room...it's a pain in the but cause it's large and heavy. Try to find soemthing 14.4 and under. Anything under 12 will cost you $$$ but the 13-14 range is still decently priced. If anything..a lightweight 15.
Next time your in a FS ot BB, see if you are allowed to fold the 17 inche laptop and carry it around the store and put it on your lap...you'll see what i mean.Last edited by Narci; Apr 4th, 2007 at 04:42 PM.

$2000 for a desktop can buy you a top of the line desktop. Just check the Deals forum and BST computers forum.
