Need Opinions - Nikkor 28mm/35mm 1.8 G and Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 or Nkkor 17-55mm 2.8
I currently have 80-200mm 2.8 and 50mm 1.8D. I've been mulling on how I can build up my lenses around the wide to standard ranges.
Option 1 - 28mm 1.8G/ 35mm 1.8 G and Tokina 11-16mm 2.8.
Pros: Faster glass in 28/35mm range, excellent optical quality
Cons: Need to keep switching lenses within the wide end
Option 2 - Nikkor 17-55mm 2.8
Pros: Zoom lens with awesome optical quality, convenience
Cons: DX format only, not UWA, not a 1.8
These options have their shortcomings and benefits, but just wondering how people would fill up their wide-standard ranges with these options. Budget would be around $950 to fill this need, so these option are most likely going to be purchased second hand. I'm not looking at Tamron or Sigma since I've been that route for years without being content with the image quality and performance. Looking for an all Nikkor line up now (except for Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 which is exceptional).
( oh yes, I have a dx body - D90 and plan to upgrade to the model after D7000)

Definitely get the new 28 1.8 and Tokina, I own the 28 and I have used the 11-16 before and absolutely love both of those lenses

Thanks superock! Do you have an album with your 28mm shots? If I go this route, it'll take me a bit longer to get both lens. But if it's worth it, then I'll definitely save up more for this combo.

I guess it depends on what you shoot more... I have both the Nikon 17-55 and Tokina 11-16. I definitely use the 17-55 more often as it is always on my camera. Both are good, but the Tokina is so wide, I don't use it as much.

14-24 2.8 is probably the best wide angle out there, but that's definitely out of your price range. my second choice would be Tokina 11-16 2.8 DX or the 16-28 2.8 FX.

+1, except consider 35 over 28 if you need something more versatile and if budget is an issue

Thanks guys. I'll probably visit Aden Camera to try out the 28mm 1.8 and compare to the 35mm 1.8 and maybe 17-55mm 2.8. I'll try to determine if I need the extra extra speed at 28/35 and compare the AF for all the lenses.
I'll let you guys know my findings after trying it out

Don't see the point of the 28 f1.8 on DX cameras. It's a weird focal length, in between wide and normal. Just get the 35 f1.8, a fantastic lens, for a third the price.

Thought about that and read some reviews of 28 1.8 on a DX. Based on the reviews, it doesn't perform as well compared to FX formats. But, I still want to give it a try for curiousity sake since many people vouch for it.

At this point, it doesn't make sense to go 17-55mm 2.8 since I know I'll be selling it once I go full frame in a couple of years.. Wider 28mm and 1.8g is what sold me to this lens.
The 35mm 1.8 is also a good deal for the optics, but since I want a lens for keeps - I think the 28mm is a definite keeper.
