When I arrived in Canada, I didn't know any good brands of winter coats, and bought a few that looked good but were not warm. It averages -10 to -15C in Toronto, but can get down to -40C windchill a few days a year. They are a bit more expensive, but try to get one of the brands in this comparison.

Try marks.com, altitudesports.com, thelasthunt.com, atmosphere.ca, sportchek.ca

There's some good BD sales online, and some free shipping this time of year.

May help you to watch this video on Youtube - I wish I had.

Have a look at this - actually I'm considering getting one myself, depends on how many hours he'll be outdoors

Better deal here for $259.99:

Plus 4% Ebates cash back which pays for the $10 spend on membership for 10% off, so $26 off which is basically the tax...

* Just a note that the Gotham is a shorter jacket, won't go past hips

I own a Gotham, and it has served me well over the years. However, like one of the posters said above, its a shorter jacket. I wanted something longer and warmer.

I was able to try out the following in store:
North Face Shielder Parka - Looks good, but not much warmer than my Gotham.
Eddie Bauer Noble Down Parka - very warm, however, its not waterproof, and the fabric didn't seem like it would block the wind effectively.
Eddie Bauer Superior Down Parka - very warm, waterproof, and the exterior fabric feels better suited for wind blocking.
North Face McMurdo Parka - didn't find one that fit me, but it even though it was a parka, it was quite abit shorter than I expected.

Ultimately I went with the Superior Down Parka. I would recommend trying out in store to make a decision.
EDIT: I forgot to mention, I didn't get a chance to try out the Woods Down Parka that Sportchek carries. Apparently its 800 fill, and very warm.
