Netflix is making good on its plan to invest $5 billion in original content.
The streaming service has handed out a straight-to-series 10-episode order for a drama based on Richard Morgan's 2002 novel Altered Carbon.
Adapted by Laeta Kalogridis (Avatar, Shutter Island) and Skydance Television, the passion project is set in the 25th century and explores what happens when the human mind becomes digitized and the soul is transferable from one body to another. It centers on Takeshi Kovacs, an ex-elite interstellar warrior known named Envoy who has been imprisoned for 500 years and when he is downloaded into a future he had tried to stop. If Envoy can solve a single murder in a world where technology has made death nearly obsolete, he will get a chance at a new life on Earth.
Kalogridis previously penned the a screenplay for Altered Carbon to no avail. That has now become the Netflix drama.
Kalogridis will pen the script, exec produce and serve as showrunner. Skydance's David Ellison, Dana Goldberg and Marcy Ross exec produce alongside Kalogridis' Mythology Entertainment partners Brad Fischer and James Vanderbilt.
Altered Carbon expands Netflix's relationship with Skydance, which also has comedy Grace and Frankie set up at the streamer.
For Netflix, Altered Carbon becomes the latest series in the works at the digital behemoth and comes as part of the company's plan to invest an impressive $5 billion in original content. Their drama roster also includes Gypsy, Mind Hunter, Black Mirror, Stranger Calls, The Get Down, Sens8, Narcos and many more.
