Netflix price hike (another one)

Netflix has announced that it is increasing the price for new subscribers in both the U.S. and Canada to $9.99 / month, on top of the last $1 price increase in May 2014.
http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2015/10/08 ... 64876.html

They previously said that existing customers were grandfathered until May 2016 at $7.99 / month, but now it's not clear what the price for existing subscribers will become in May 2016. It sounds like existing subscribers will increase from $7.99 to $8.99 in May, and then to $9.99 in October next year.

At the time of that 2014 price hike, Netflix also made these changes:
- cut the number of simultaneous streams allowed per account from 3 to 2
- introduced a cheapskate $7.99 / month plan with SD only and a single stream allowed
- introduced a more expensive family plan at $11.99 / month that allows Ultra HD and up to 4 streams

Only the standard plan is currently slated to go up - the cheapskate and family plan prices will remain the same for the moment.

I just got the email about this.
Dear Bob,
We’re writing to let you know about an update to our prices. As a thank you for being a valued Netflix member, nothing is changing for you right now. Your price is staying the same and is guaranteed not to change for one year. In order to continue adding more TV shows and movies, we are increasing our price for new members from $8.99 to $9.99 for the 2 screens at a time plan.
Disappointing but not surprising.

Terrible timing though. This comes a week after their Epix deal expired and they had to get rid of a lot of popular movies in the US.

I'm honestly surprised at $10/month.
I'd be happy even if it was $20/month just so I wouldn't have to pay those jerks for real cable.

A buck is a buck. It's not that big of a deal. But I don't watch netflix much anymore for some reason. I've thought of cancelling because of that. Crave seems to keep me pretty busy.

I didn't get an email, even though Netflix has my email address on the account.

Just got an email saying that the price is going to be going up from 8.99/m to 9.99/m (for two screens). If you're already registered the price is going to stay the same for a year before going up. For new customers it's going to be 9.99.

That sucks, but still worth it imo. Their original content is for the most party very good and my wife has been binge watching the crap out of Netflix since being on maternity leave.

Price increase does not apply across the board - some grandfathering going on.
Log into your account to see how long you are good for.
For example, mine states: Your plan price is guaranteed through at least May 9, 2016

But after that...does it go upto regular price of 9.99 ? (Or is the reg package 11.99?)

Regular package is $9.99 - the $11.99 is a move up to 4K / 4 streams.

But they said people who are paying $8.99 right now are good until October 2016, so surely they won't put the price up more than that for the grandfathered customers paying $7.99 now?

Umm, I think we are saying the same thing.

I am paying $7.99 a month now. I would assume come May 2016 (at earliest) I would be moved up to $9.99 new regular price.
They may move it out or plop me into $8.99 - who honestly cares :D

New subscribers are going to be at $9.99 - being grandfathered has kept me at $7.99 for a "bonus period" - if they want to be move me to $9.99 (the new price) all good or an intermediary price like $8.99 even better...

No, I think you're saying that grandfathered customers paying $7.99 now will move up to $9.99 in May. I'm saying that I think they will move up to $8.99 in May, and then everyone will move up to $9.99 next October. As far as I can tell from published stories, Netflix didn't actually address that point in their press release, and they haven't posted anything officially on their web site yet. Some news stories say one thing, some say the other. Was there anything in the email? (I didn't get it)

Mod: This thread doesn't belong in the Entertainment forum. We normally discuss internet streaming services in the Computers and Electronics forum, while the Entertainment forum is for discussing content.

10$ a month for all the content Netflix offers is still a great price.
