Network Access Storage

i'm thinking of buying a NAS drive to download torrents on without having my computer on. i understand that most NAS boxes come with software to manage torrent downloads. however, since i'm on a crappy ISP, they throttle the torrent downloads. to get around this, i use a proxy server which i login from the computer which is running the torrent download.

i'd like to know if there are any NAS boxes out there that will allow me to use the proxy server so that my torrents aren't throttled when i'm using the NAS, alone, to manage my torrents.

I believe the DNS-323 can be configured to use a proxy. I am not a DNS-323 expert, but based on what I have read, and the configuration settings, it seems it should be possible.

It will require a little work.
1) Install the DNS-323 with the funplug hack. http://www.horto.ca/?p=10#comments
2) Install Transmission BT Web client http://www.horto.ca/?p=21
3) Set Transmission and proxy setting.

I have had a DNS-323 since March of 2010. It is a cool device, not as fast as I would like it. If you do go this way, make sure the drives you select have confirm useage. Seagates are a good choice, for this device, steer clear of WD. I have some WD greens, and the transfer rates not that great, but it does the job. I use the DNS to handle all my torrents. I have it set up so I just download the file, Transmission is watching the torrent d/l dir, and once it sees a torrent file, it automatically starts the download. I also store my personal files on the DNS and I have it backup to the second drive every Thursday night automatically. To set up the device, unless you know unix, expect some head stratching, but once it is all setup it runs nicely.

Good luck,

C
