New muffler? Dealer or?
My muffler is just about shot. The question I have is---should I go to one of the chain stores(Midas or Speedy etc) or to the dealer? I have a '98 Mercury Grand Marquis. In the past, with my previous cars I've always gone to the chain store = cheaper. Are the dealer mufflers better and worth it in the long run?

from most expensive to the least:
dealer > muffler shops > small private mechanics

Agreed. Put Canadian Tire between muffler shops and private mechanics.

Nice muffler warranty at CDN Tire if they install.

Yeah, I'd look for a warranty if you're planning on keeping the car for the long term. The muffler shops also usually offer that as well. Keep in mind though that the warranty is probably material only - you'll have to pay labor and they'll probably get you on the extras like clamps and other consummable charges which aren't covered by the warranty.

Of if you want to do it inexpensively ... you should be able to purchase the muffler for under $100 at an auto parts store. Add in a 6" "sleeve" pipe, a couple of exhaust clamps ... borrow a sawzall and a socket set .... get a friend to show you how (or search the web).
