hey im from ottawa living in toronto now but theres lots to do without a locals help. if you are into live music scene check out these venues on the net for information Barrymores, The Rainbow, Zapods, mavericks, babylon, cajun attic the roxy cafe dekuf and these are mostly located in the byward market downtown minutes away from Rideau centre accesible bus routes to downtown are 86 elmvale, 95 orleans, check this site for more info about transit http://www.octranspo.com/Main_MenuE.asp good music stores beside ur norm HMV retrotown music, birdman sound, cd warehouse steves music these places usually sell equpiment not much merchandise
if music and the bar scene isnt ur thing or ur just like me and ur a starving college student theres cheap tuesday movie night at colisum and cineplex oden 8 $ for ticket and popcorn deal go early very busy.
if you are in the shopping thing bayshore and rideau are good but if u are looking original and cheap goodies go downtown on rideau street there are lil boutiques with different fashion tastes the glebe is very good and westbro village is good
ur just in time for winterlude must try is beavertail and a skate or lil walk on rideau canal its walk accesible with walk path
favorite food places newport restaurant really great pizza in the westbro village on richmond and down the street is the works a great but exspensive a good spurlge burger joint. lonestar and big daddys merivale fish market, Zaks,Gabriels pizza.
if u have any questions pm if u want all these things i suggested u can do alone or with a group of friends from rez get ur self bus tickets and just explore downtown everything is all close together and its all walking distance when u get downtown

oh wow, i didnt think i was gonna get any replies on this.
Im just a typical university student, I like sports, but to join rec. clubs is too expensive, plus it didnt know about it before and i already shed like 4bills on a freakin goodlife membership. I appreciate the suggestions above but i dont like going to things alone. I wonder if any mac kids are in ottawa this year.
CALLING ALL MAC KIDS. Where are you?

The 96 also goes from Kanata to downtown. The 97 goes from bayshore to billings bridge, but also goes right through downtown. The 96 & 97 run until 2 or 3am I think, the 95 now runs 24/7.
I find the best shows are around 6pm on tuesday, earlier is even better if it is doable. The combo is ~$8 for popcorn, a drink, and a movie ticket on tuesdays, you can pay like $1 more to upsize drink/popcorn if you are so inclined. The alternative deal is I think ~$4 for just the movie ticket, no popcorn or drink. This deal applies all all Famous Players & Cineplex in Ottawa, so that includes Silvercity, South Keys, Colisseum, and barrhaven.
Byward market downtown also has some neat original stuff. Can be fun to wander.if you are in the shopping thing bayshore and rideau are good but if u are looking original and cheap goodies go downtown on rideau street there are lil boutiques with different fashion tastes the glebe is very good and westbro village is good
winterlude isn't for another few months. You've already missed the Tulip Festival and Bluesfest though for this year.ur just in time for winterlude must try is beavertail and a skate or lil walk on rideau canal its walk accesible with walk path
I'm from Ottawa, I just don't usually check the students section, but I'm bored today.

If you're looking for bars in DT Ottawa, most of the uni students go to Pub 101, the Cabin, Tequila something (Sunrise maybe), and some go to The Honest Lawyer (21 yr old and up though, but they have a frieken bowling lane in there). There's clubs all over the market and they're always jammin on friday's and saturday's. I wasn't a big clubbing fan, but I had some good times at Pub 101 and Cabin during my uni days. Elgin is a great street as well. If you do make some friends, nothing beats a night out at McLaren's on Elgin: Pool tables and like 100 high def tvs with every sporting event on. And then finish the night off with a gigantic poutine from Elgin Street Diner.
Are you staying in rez at Ottawa U? If so, I'm sure you'll be able to get to know the other people in your rez. Plus, there are so many student groups that you could join all year round.
Just put yourself out there man. Ask some of your co-workers if they want to grab a beer after work or something and just spark up conversations, so who has stuff in common with you.

sounds pretty good, adam06. Actually im at a research facility, so most of the people here are researchers, so older people with ph.D's. I work with 2 other guys, they're cool at work, but neither one of is very out going, and the one has some friends here from school, so he just does stuff with him, and drinking isn't really their thing. So you can see how I a little stuck in this case.

Everyone is talking about bars and stuff like that. I'm not into that stuff. I think Ottawa as more of an active city. So, I would suggest joining Ultimate frisbee (winter or fall league) or something like that - if you are female then you will be called to play and you won't even have to pay. I also met quite a few people playing badminton at the RA centre - personally I didn't like that place for badminton, but I certainly met a lot of people there and they were quite social. If you are good at volleyball then go to the drop in at the nepean sprotsplex the advanced guys are pretty good there. You'll be sure to meet people that way.
If you are still here for the summer Ottawa has one of the biggest ultimate leagues in Ontario.
FYI, I'm a Mac alumni from 2000 - when just about every Eng Phys student came up to Ottawa so essentially my whole class came up here. Also, keep an eye out for Mac Alumni events we are trying organize one soon.
On another note (sad to say) but if you know anyone from Queens I here those guys get together once a month so you might be able to hop on to that.
