A good quality paintjob starts at about $3000 and goes up from there depending on work needing to be done.

new paint job
I have a black '01 VW Jetta, and the paint is starting to look a little rough, lots of scratches, the hood has a lot of rock chips but no dents or deep scrapes.
what should I expect to pay for a new paint job?
Thanks,
Menno.

Before you spend a ton on a paint job, take it to a detailer and for a couple of hundred, have them polish the car. They have all sorts of products that can remove scratches and fill in the small chips. They have high speed polishers and buffers and may just bring tot old paint to life.

I agree! I spent $400 and had a detailer come to my house and he spent 6 hours buffing the black paint on my 98 Corvette and he got rid of a ton of scratches and swirls! And since then I have bought my own buffer so I now go over the finish a couple of times a year with a very mild polish and get rid of any more minor scratches that show up. Eventually I will run out of clear coat and will need to get the car painted, but I've always wanted to paint this car green eventually anyhow.

I just returned from Orlando, where I spent 80+ hours polishing a Lamborghini. Here's a before/after from a Porsche 911 Cabriolet I worked on locally back in October:
