Sanyo wrote: You do realize TD keeps track of everytime you upgrade and downgrade accounts right? I use to work there and see this scam pulled. Once your flagged it goes onto your comments and your pretty much screwed. You could downgrade, though the banker isnt going to say anything, if they are smart enough (and if your lucky you might find a dumb banker) they'll lodge that you have a Premimum visa and downgrading -- let's see what happens when you try to upgrade and downgrade it the next year ;) . Even though we're only talking about a $120 fee, it is still considered FRAUD!
You should read your own post before making false accusations. This is NOT a scam. The way to do this was actually explained by the TD people. So if TD wanted your business by explaing to you how to do this, then we are all just following TD's rules and TD's ways of doing things.

Sounds likes you didn't understand TD's ways of doing things. But that's ok, you don't work for TD any more.

myapple wrote: That TD select account suggestion sounds like a lot of work....just like applying for a new/different travel card every year just to avoid/waive the annual fees.

I think a low-fee travel card with great point/insurance features was long overdue. Great find OP.
Yes it sounds like more work, but it takes 2 phone calls. One to set things up the first time. Second to close or downgrade the select account. It gets you the fee waived TD visa.

Low fee vs no fee, I take the no fee.

Checked out Scotia's website:

$39 card - Bonus 8,000 points with 1st purchase.
$99 card - Bonus 20,000 points with 1st purchase.

Looks tempting.

Hmm... how picky are they about what constitutes a "travel" expense? e.g. gas for a road trip? guest room at a condo?

Bingo. This is exactly why the CapOne Cash is better (and free). Pass on this one.

 No it's not. Do you have to pay the $120 annual fee? Yes. Does the $120 come out of your pocket? Yes, it does. TECHNICALLY you're out $120 until you spend $100 specifically on travel, so please stop repeating misleading information, especially because they're going to yank it away soon enough. Wouldn't it be easier to just make the AF $20? Of course it would. So why not just make it a permanent $20 AF? Because the rebate is temporary. They've done it that way to pad their numbers. When they've hit their goals, the rebate will be gone. Trust me.

Anyways, back on topic.

American Express are not very useful here in Canada outside of the major cities and the touristy areas close to the US border. Pretty good insurance for $39 though so it might be worth it just for purchasing flights and hotels. But otherwise it'll never become a reliable everyday card.

Didn't CIBC go down this same road a few years ago, and then terminated the partnership not long after?

Not interested. So many other gold/premium cards at no fee. If they waive the fee for the first year, then I'll take it, otherwise thanks but no thanks.

Just a heads up: They have also launched a no fee companion VISA card for times when AMEX is not accepted. The VISA also lets you collect the travel rewards points (at a rate of 1 point for every $2 spent), so it is part of the same travel rewards program.

What types of things fall into "entertainment" ?

And the best thing about this is you can cancel the Amex card, get the fee refunded, and keep the Visa.

When your kid throws a baseball to break the neighbours window, and brawl ensues between the 2 families, get taken to the hospital, and you pay the medical bills with this card. Hang on, that might also qualify as travel.
