about windows vista, any $300 dell pc will run fine.

They will be releasing 7 different versions of Windows Vista. A handful of that will be at the consumer level to meet different levels of hardware requirements. There will be a version for low cost systems with low hardware requirements. In contrast, the version with all the bells and whistles, apparently most if not all of today's mainstream systems will be powerful enough to adequately support it, or so they say.

Yes, I've read exactly the same thing. I'm running an A64 3000+, 1 GB ram curretly, but will definately upgrade when Vista hits.

I think its still in Beta 1. I wonder how many Beta stages it'll go through before it reaches Release Candidate status? I've been using XP since it was in early Beta 1 stages, but I don't think I'll try Vista just yet.

If memory serves me correctly, it went to beta 3, then to RC1 before final.
OEMs always get the final version a month or so before the public release.

As for requirements (or recommendations):
RAM - Min 512MB, 1GB will most likely be a better base.
CPU:
AMD - Sempron, Athlon 64, X2, FX, Turion 64, Opteron
Intel - Xeon, P-EE, P-EE with HT, P-HT, P-D, Celeron DP4 600 or higher. Intel recommends a P4 w/HT and EMT64 (600 class) chip for a business workstation.
Either way MS is encouraging the use of mid to high range 64bit chips, but of course your 32bit chip will work as well.
Video - To use all the GFX features you need a card that supports Vista Display Driver Model. If the card doesn't then the OS will still work but will provide XP-level of graphical functionality. DirectX 9 and 64mb is a minimum
ATI: All DX9 GPUs (M10 or above,R300 or above, RV350 or above, RS400, RS480, RS482, RC410). Or in other words anything higher than a Radeon 9500, x300 will work.
Nvidia: Anything higher than an FX5200 is Vista ready.
For laptops - Intels 945G express chipset or ATIs RS400 or RS480 family chipsets are compatible.

What do you mean by ATI (M10 or above, R300 etc...) - what is this x300?
Is there a Radeon 9500 which is not above x300?

From what i've read the lower end series of vista will basically be non-existant and sold mainly to third world countries.
