AMD FX-9590 @ Newegg - 149.99

On the news that AMD is seriously reducing prices on MANY CPUs, I accidentally found this one at Newegg.ca for $149.99 ($95 off). It is a controversial rhino of the CPU world: too hot and too slow for its price, but you can downclock it and get the best AM3+ platform 8-core chip for less than their other crystals cost. Its working frequency is 4.7 GHz, which also gives a not bad single thread speed. Beware that TDP is 220W (but TDP is the HW limit, NOT the continuos power dissipated), so check your power supply and MB specs.

AFAIK these are the best chips with parameters so good, theat they were overclocked by factory and tested at their speed. This is the best and ultimate upgrade for AM3+ motherboards.

I found that price through AMD.com with a link on Newegg. The same search through newegg.ca gave $349...

Lowest price was $13x.xx after PM mid to late summer. For the motherboard, you can purchase it off of Ebay for $150-$250.

With the just announced price drop for Ryzen, you might be better off to spend a few more bucks to get a lower-end Ryzen.

Yes, either a low end Ryzen or a low end i5 would be better for performance and future hardware support

You also need to get an expensive cooler for this cpu. Not worth it as it comes to about the same price as Ryzen 5 1500x or i5 8400 that comes with a hsf.

IMO it does not make sense buying this cpu now

Ryzen 2 is just a few months away. You’ll probably get same performance for same price and 1/4 power

Sweet upgrade for my Athlon X3 that sits idly in the basment being used as a side table.

What are you guys takling about Ryzen and other stuff? This is only good to upgrade your existing system, but the cheapest Ryzen 3 costs around the same with lower frequency and less cores, and requires new MB and ddr 4. RyZen 5 or i5 DON'T cost $150.
I have an old 990 MB, premium one from gigabyte. This is a decent upgrade from any 4 cores am3+ CPU. I'm planning to run it underclocked.

If your running am3 it's a good deal, but if your not no point in buying the previous gen, this is not a good deal for someone looking for a system they can upgrade later.

Doesn't seem worth the trouble in 2018, so much power draw and so much heat. You will end up having to buy a good after market cooler just to run this at stock since it doesn't come with one.

Or hold off buying CPUs for a year until the exploits get fixed.

These CPUs seem to draw too much power and create lots of heat. Not sure if worth it these days?
