What is the 16GB Optain Memory? Is that similar to a ssd to load Windows 10 on or something different?

It's trying to intelligently cache things so that they load faster. You don't get to choose. My opinion is that it's a niche product best suited to people that don't want to buy an SSD (don't know how to image your install, too expensive etc.)

If you have a spinning hard disk for your OS and you're using your machine for work, it could be enough to increase your productivity workflow on the cheap. Other than that single usage, I don't see it as anything that would provide a noticeable improvement.

No one is questioning that you got a good deal for the specs on the apple that you purchased. That doesn't detract from OP's orange.

You're essentially saying that you got less RAM, a slower graphics card, a 430W power supply for SLI and saved $450 apples to oranges. And you missed out on optane ;)

Your computer is quantitatively worse than the one in OP's post, is going to cost more to upgrade and it cost you less money. Everyone that sees this deal for what it is knows what a high end PC costs in the age of Bitcoin and RAM shortages.

yes GTX 1080 is pretty much half of the deal indeed, but i would like to see his PC specs and how much he paid for it

No nVME and not a K CPU. Not a great gaming machine. 1080 is over kill when the rest of the hardware sucks.

Last week I built an Alienware r7 with 8700k, 16gb hyper x, 250 GB M2, 2tb, 1080 for 2100 after myunidays...if only ebates was still 10% it would have been cheaper than this one.

Who are you people? You can buy an M.2 drive separately and install it.

Argh this config doesn't have everything that I want! Everything sucks! Argh custom is way too expensive!

I built my own machines. I'm just pointing out why this isn't a great config for the price if you want an all in gaming machine (which you would for this price, and if you're going for a GTX 1080). Since this is a deals forum it's worth pointing out to people who might think this is a good thing to throw their money at. Also, you'd suggest replacing the CPU as well?

Alienware R7 uses a POS mobo with the X16 physical PCIE lanes operating at X8 electrically. So there goes your chance of upgrading to the next gen gfx which will likely max out X8.

I7 8700 sucks? Did you hit your head somewhere when you git up this morning?

Yea, sure, K would give you an extra 10-12% boost but a regular 8700 is a perfectly fine match to a 1080.

that 16gb of optane takes a M.2 slot and cost as much as a 256gb ssd, might as well get a ssd for OS drive instead of this weird thing.

It's on page 20 of the service manual.

It's a stupid design decision that makes no sense and been a source of agony for a lot of Alienware fans.

why the negative note here?

if you guys don't have the cash for this or don't know anything about hardware , just look away.
I have recently built a similar one and it cost more than 2400$ (+ plumbing for water coolers + monitor) .
my tower is not beautiful as this one in this thread.
price may drop but actual deal is just good.

I follow PC hardware pretty closely, and while this is a good price, it's not an RFD Hot Deal price. You could put together the same system, using components at regular price, for about the same price (Particularly if you skimp in all the same ways that whitebox makers like CyberpowerPC do. For example, this has a mATX motherboard despite the huge case and a cheaper power supply). I know not everyone wants to build a system, and this isn't a bad way to go.

The arguments in this thread are pretty hyperbolic in both directions. No, you can't get this for $1300 and no this isn't as good a deal as those "gaming" Dell systems from a few weeks back (although it is more powerful).
