What does usenet.com have to do with newsgroups as a whole?
So are they going after users of e-mail next? Because we can use e-mail to spread pirated software too?
The lawsuit makes absolutely no sense.

But you've just proven my point. They've been going after torrent sites and users for years, winning one court case after another. They are only now starting to go after the newsgroups and have yet to prove anything in any court and if they do that could be a long ways off. The torrent battle has been lost, but newsgroups present a different series of legal issues which could go either way. Nothing is absolutely safe but at the present time newsgroups are far safer than torrents..
PS Don't presume to know what I've read because I did in fact read that article about them going after newsgroups and had a good laugh over it.Last edited by woof; Oct 23rd, 2007 at 04:18 PM.

yeah, they are supposedly going after one host, usenet.com?
I am not entirely sure why there is the discussion of which is "safer", as we are in canada and will never have to worry about the riaa? Who knows, maybe the cria one day, but so far it's limited to the americans

Usenet.com is simply a commercial company operating independent news servers that you pay to access. Their competitors include Giganews, Easynews, NewsDemon, Tera News and dozens more.
Your local service provider probably has an in house free news server for you but it's probably pretty crappy with poor retention, porno and maybe some warez groups blocked and the like. The only alternative is to sign up with one of the above mentioned commercial news server providers. The in house news server is a good way to start out though until you get some experience, learn to use the software, and have a better idea of what to look for from the commercial companies (expect to pay about $10/month).

There is enormous pressure on the Canadian government from the movie and music industry (mostly US) to pass the same kinds of laws that they have in the US (and I believe Europe) so that they can begin going after Canadians in the same way they have Americans. The fact that we've had a series of unstable minority governments has probably prevented legislation going forward much to the frustration of the Americans. It's probably going to happen sooner or later though because as I say there is enormous pressure from the US on this and if the current Harper government stays in power long enough they will have no excuse for not passing something.

Yeah, that's old news... They're going to call us names and put us on their list of mean countries... oooo... scary!

There may be pressure, but as the article points out:
It appears we got a good amount of time still until the nazi copyright laws from the states make their way here."The disturbing thing is that the Canadian government doesn't seem to take this very seriously.”
He pointed out that the Harper government hasn't even drafted new copyright legislation.

I think newsgroup started from BBS which was free in the dial-up age. So it's been here for a long long time. Ppl used to chat and share pictures etc.. Some tried to share other stuffs and NG started to charge for usage.
You can actually create and name a group yourself to share it with others. However, these days NG consists of almost anything you can think of. So it's kind of hard to crack it down as almost all the NGs have privacy protection that they won't record any activities. That's the difference between BT and NG._______________
