since we're on the topic of newsgroups...would anyone like to share connections?

Do you mean like share a newsgroup account? Once you get connected with a service, like usenetserver.com, thats what I use, you wont want to share the username password cause you will want to d/l 24x7.

If you are asking about connection speeds and number of connections available the speed is as fast as your internet connection is.

I remember when I first got newsgroups my friends were like "omg you're paying for piracy?"

I laugh because a couple weeks later they ask to borrow my account for a couple of hours.

Was on Rogers Extreme and was easily maxing that out.

Now I'm in the states on Comcast... And it maxes that out too..

Simple answer, nothing.

Say for instance if e-mail was used for piracy. Targeting Yahoo! Mail will not and can not do anything to stop piracy using e-mail.

My mistake for assuming that the answer to your question was obvious. The goal is to target one company and go after them to set a legal precedent. Once you have that one legal victory in the court system then you can easily go after all the other newsgroup companies (and ISPs with newsgroup servers) to bring them into line or shut them down. If you lose in the courts then you go running back to the politicians that you own and get them to pass new laws fixing the problem and then back to the courts. That first court battle will largely determine the outcome of the war and what happens to the newsgroup system.
