well, he ain't gonna get attention...
bush is too obssessed with a country that is 'planning' to get nuclear capabilities, to focus on a country with real nuclear weapons

North Korea will respond to any pre-emptive U.S. military attack with an "annihilating strike and a nuclear war,"
It says "attack" not threat._______________

boo hoo...
People get nervous because NK has 1 missile that probably takes a couple of hours to reach North America while the US has 3847238942389423 missiles that could take out NK in less then 5 minutes.
Plus the NK missile is so old it's probably going to miss its intended target and land on Mexico or something, that is if Bush doesn't shoot it down first from the comfort of his Texas ranch with his Nintendo Joystick_______________

North Korea is in a position to do a lot of damage to the world economy. They could hit Japan(2nd largest economy), possibly the U.S., the worlds largest economy or China the worlds fastests growing economy. That'll hurt everybody.

Jul 3rd, 2006 02:33 PM #14Yeah, that's why I'm not too worried about NK. NK doesn't have too many real allies... a threat of WWIII will only come if different countries take different sides, but I don't see how this will happen with NK. One US submarine has enough nuclear firepower to cripple the entire country.

I think you guys aren't giving enough credit to North Korea. Rogue states are just that. Rogue. Meaning that they dont play by international rules. Their threats are very real and should be heeded. Kim Jong Il probably doesnt care much about Pyong Yang as most of North Korea is rural anyways. Very few urban centers and Bush, should he choose to "retaliate" would not be able to accurately fire a missel from NORAD to North Korea and get KJI anyways.
Next on my point is the North Korean army is huge. The expenditure based on percentage of GDP is staggaring. The amount of money KJI pours into the military program would be enough to feed a good number of his starving people. That said, the army may be outdated and old in the sense that they are still firing weapons designed during the soviet union era but make no mistake about it they wont go down as easily as Iraq did.
The Mutually Assured Destruction clause would come into effect here and Bush would not likely retaliate with nuclear attacks on North Korea due to the fact that one of the US's largest allies, South Korea, is sitting right next to North Korea. The fallout of a nuclear strike caused by the US would almost instantly create havoc for northern parts of China, Japan, and lest we forget South Korea.
Unfortunatly for the US, the DPRK is sitting in a very favorable zone and they know full well that the US will exhaust every means possible before stricking a nuclear attack on them.
