Noise Complaint in Markham

I live in a Markham townhouse end unit and the neighbour I am attached to has a basketball net setup in his living room. He plays occasionally but when he starts dribbling inside the house, I can hear every "thump" for about an hour. On top of that, the young couple argues and yells every so often as well.

I have spoken to the husband in the past and he said 10pm is not that late to play basketball. FML. I also asked the 3rd neighbour that's attached to the other side of this loud neighbour but assuming he doesn't want to be involved, he said he doesn't hear anything. I highly doubt that.

At this point, I can only call the police when this happens again. Anyone know what the police will do other than giving them a warning? I feel like this will be ongoing and don't want to call every time this happens. Any suggestions to resolve this one and for all? These neighbours are also renters. It's been over a year and they seem to have extended their contract already.

Think of the Childre…
When you call the police, they'll show up after 4 hours. Lowest priority call.

WOULD SOMEBODY THINK OF THE CHILDREN!!!

Noise bylaw is usually after 11pm. Calling the cops will just cause your neighbors to make noise at all hours of the day, non stop

Your other, more permanent option, is to insulate the wall between the units properly and use double layer drywall to block a lot of the noise. Your current wall is likely just a block wall with strapping to attach drywall to.

I’ve got a sklz mini hoop in my basement and if you use the ball it came with it can get pretty loud bouncing the ball

Not much you can do unless it’s after 11 and before 7am op.
Talking to them is your only recourse. Unfortunately some people who live in these joint environments don’t care if they are effecting someone else’s life, they just expect you to deal with it

That I get and have seen. But living room in a townhouse?
I can't even imagine. How big is this living room and just what the thought process is to put it in a living room.

Turn your stereo speakers to the common wall and play loud bass every night at 10pm until 11pm for about a week, he'll get the message.

Probably better to start at 7am as they sound like they stay up later, though getting into a war with your neighbours is unlikely to end well as it will escalate.
If you're sensitive to noise you should be living in a detached home.
If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy.

Put the speakers upstairs and hope that the common wall goes to his bedroom.
Blast some music at random times at night. Maybe for about 10-15s. And space them apart maybe 5-10minutes. but don't make it consistent. Vary it within the 5-10min range.

Yeah, I wouldn't do that. Everyone in the neighborhood may think that you're some kind of sex fiend and will then want to avoid you.

Time to get a 12" subwoofer and point it at your sharing wall. Run it nonstop within bylaw hours everyday but give it a 5min break every hour. He'll either get the message or we'll see you on the news in a few weeks lol

This is one of the reasons why we moved into a detached. There's zero privacy when you share walls and you can't enjoy your home as you want to (for both you and your neighbor.)

Talk to them first. Starting a noise war probably isn't a good idea. If talking to them doesn't work, then maybe you can choose to start the noise war.

OP already spoke to him. Neighbor is a ****. I would plead with him one more time. Ask him to please not play basketball inside as every ball bounce can be heard and felt in your unit and is driving you insane. Depending on his response it's on.

Of course there's yelling, he's always claiming there was a foul and carrying on like a soccer player!

Seriously though, basketball in an attached house-your neighbour is a moron. Try contacting his landlord.
Tell the neighbour you don't want to get into a noise war; that its not fun for anyone to be woken up at 3am...6am...stereo blasting or basketball thumping when other person has dinner guests. Maybe when he realizes its about to escalate he will take stop.

Cook stinky fish, if you do it enough the smell will get into his unit. That will show him who's the boss.

SUCKS to live in a town home hey? hahahaha ... time to move into a detached home and you won't have such issues.

My best option for you .... have some floor standing loud speakers at the shared wall.

Then play your favourite porn movie and turn up the sound.

Play it over and over and over and over.

Who says you can't have SEX around the clock? Who says you can't watch porn around the clock?

Then to switch things up ... blast some music all day long ...

Remember ... your hours are from 7:00:01am to 10:59:59pm ... there is NO SUCH THING AS NOISE POLLUTION during that period of time.

Oh yeah .... download a copy of "OLD MACDONALD" or some children's song and put that on repeat for 16 hours ... it's gonna drive them crazy!!!! Who says a child cannot listen to the same song all day long.
