*NOV 6!* TORONTO: Capture The Flag 2009
UPDATE - Nov 4th - Still Happening, 2 days away!
Facebook Attendance has DOUBLED to >2000, so get there early!
UPDATE! - DELAYED!
CTF has been Postponed to November 6th because of the crappy weather. I'm pretty sure the turnout would have been half-decent either way, but I can't say I'm complaining much anyway
*Edit 2* - I know it doesn't say it's delayed anywhere. The announcement was made and sent to everyone on the mailing list, I don't know if it's been posted.
CAPTURE THE FLAG 2009!

Back this year (hopefully!) for the same old fun!
Capture the flag 2009 will take place in the financial district on October 2nd from 9pm-11:30pm. Meet at Bay & King at 9PM SHARP.
If any of you have come you know how much fun it is, if you haven't come... Then try it this year! Basically it's a big game of capture the flag (1500+ people) played on the streets of T.O. Glowsticks are issued to identify teams, and I'm always on the one that loses.
But I'll be there anyway!
Info on the facebook page
Webpage for the 2008 event (They don't have '09 up yet)
*edit* 2009 is up! (But it still has the 2008 title lol)
BUT HERE IS THE IMPORTANT PART
They've lost a lot of money with previous events because the turnout has been so huge (it was 100-300 people when this first started) and glowsticks arent cheap. So this year they're asking people to donate before the event so they can break even. Currently they're about $300 away from the goal and the event is in 1 week.
If you plan on coming, please donate! You can donate any amount HERE and it is greatly appreciated. Think about it, donating a dollar or two is still only $2 each for a night of fun. Please help!

I will be there. Really hoping the PATH isn't completely closed off again...
edit: corrupt, how do you know they're only $300 away from their goal? This event isn't even published on their homepage for some reason. I will be donating.Last edited by KorruptioN; Sep 26th, 2009 at 09:56 AM.

So what are they shutting down streets for this? 1500 people running around with glow sticks sounds like it could cause traffic problems, and other public safety issues. Besides what are they even raising money for?
Ps. I'm organizing a game of freeze tag somewhere around lawerence west. Anyone interested please donate $300 to my paypal account. All donations going to the united church of blackjays. thanks.

They really should find some better place for this where there is NO TRAFFIC. I was there last year where I see people running in front of traffic. Playing on the streets of Downtown TO is just a bad idea, do they really need an accident to realize that? They should just hold it in a park.

I'll tell you something, if you're gonna run an event don't expect anyone to fork out any money unless the event is charging people for each and every person. Throwing it in our faces that you guys need $300 to break even only makes it look desperate.
The way I see it is, if it's free then it's free. Because it seems when you gotta pay for something everyone doesn't mind, but when it's free there's always that "donation" box that helps pay for this and that. What ever happened to FREE as in not even a damn donation PERIOD?
The event sounds fun, but me forking out money to reach to an event would be considered a donation regardless if the event gets a cut out of it or not. It's money I wouldn't be spending if I wasn't going. My participation is what counts.

I'm on the mailing list, in addition to having signed up for the event. They've been sending updates out to everyone, and from the looks of it they've already confirmed the date/etc so it'll probably happen either way. Last few years they've taken >50% losses so I can't really blame them for trying to pull in some cash before the event
If you had said "Wow, I've never seen anything like this before I definitely want to check it out!" I would treat you like anyone else who was skeptical: I'd tell you to come at your leisure and see what it is all about... because it is a FREE EVENT. Since however you've chosen to let everyone know that we'd be lucky to have you present, I think you should stay home.
Post on forums about how awesome you are while you're at it. I'm confident you'll have a much more fulfilling experience. Plus it'll be free! $3 more into your pocket.
The event attracts 1500+ people every year (has for the last few) and even at the bulk discounted rate, NewMindSpace still spends $800+ to run the event - almost entirely on glowsticks. NO MONEY IS POCKETED, and Newmindspace has had a donation page on their website for years. If you show up to the event at the right time you will get a glowstick (providing they don't run out) so you don't even have to pay. Since however most of the people coming have probably played before, it's fair to ask them to contribute a little to the greater cause (the game). As I mentioned, if everyone who shows up donates 50 cents they'll make the amount necessary. It really isn't much and based on the people I've talked to, everyone who's played before WANTS to donate so they can play again this year.
P.S. I'm curious how any event you run would turn out. Please, humor us and start a big game of freeze tag somewhere, I'm sure you'll have 700+ confirmed guests and 1000+ maybe attending... Plus hundreds of word-of-mouth invites, media coverage, and several hundred dollars in VOLUNTARY donations.
It's been tried. The first game ever was in kensington market, and while this worked with a few hundred people it's obviously way too small for the current (and expected) capacity. It's also been played in Queens Park/UofT Campus, however being a residential zone it posed quite a few problems. The financial district has been the best thus far, and in 6+ years and several thousand players there has only been one relatively minor injury. Everyone plays at their own risk and at their own level of commitment. It's a game and it's the streets of Toronto, use common sense. If your parents never taught you to look both ways before you cross the street... Well then October 2nd is as good a time as any to remove you from the gene pool.
Good, then don't fork over money and don't come. I said that it was a DONATION and that ANY CONTRIBUTION would be greatly appreciated but you took it upon yourself to accuse this NOT FOR PROFIT FREE PUBLIC EVENT of essentially trying to swindle you out of your money.
So I'll say it again, don't come. I'm sure you get tons of invites to go out from other people anyway
