Now This is Funny: I Hope These Morons Don't Vote
More than half of Canadians who own high-definition television sets don't have the set-top box that allows them to watch the spectacular shows broadcast in that format, a new poll shows.
And many of those set owners don't even realize they need the extra equipment to bring in HD signals -- an indication some people think they are watching high-definition shows when they aren't.

It's a result of impulse buying. People just wanna get the latest and greatest and don't take the time to do the research.

Sad
I can understand people buying a HDTV and not getting the set top box yet (the cost for the few channels that are HD isn't justified in many people's minds). That is just a case of planning ahead by getting the new technology so you are ready when sufficient content is available.
But.... anyone who doesn't even realize they aren't watching High Definition... that is truly sad
It's things like this that will slow the spread of high def television as these idiots spread word of mouth that it isn't that great.

i have a hd tv and i know i dont watch hd tv but i dont know WHEN im getting a hdtv box. some people get tv with it because you dont replace a tv often and want to have it just for when high definition gains popularity.

So 11 people out of 1000 surveyed own a HDTV but didn't know that they need a set-top box to pull in HD signals...some of those may think they're already getting HD quality output (it's a conclusion the reporter jumps to, not something directly from the survey). I don't see that as a big deal; you can't expect everyone to be 100% informed about all the things they buy - electronics, computers, cars, homes, food, services, etc. etc. etc.

i don't see the connection between not being a geek and being able to vote

I have an HDTV and no set top box. Just ordered the new one from Star Choice though. I purchased mine for DVDs, not TV content; and it would seem most of those who were polled did the same thing..
I think those who are buying non-widescreen HDTV sets should be banned from voting since they obviously are not thinking about the future..

Unfortunately many people's purchases are governed strictly by their budget.I think those who are buying non-widescreen HDTV sets should be banned from voting since they obviously are not thinking about the future..
Nowadays about the cheapest widescreen HDTV (1080i)
that I've seen in Canada is one at Walmart that was like
$700 plus tax
$805 with tax in Ontario
You can buy a decent new large TV for under $300.
This whole topic just goes back to the theme
of just because you have money doesn't mean you're smart/wise
I still haven't gotten a HDTV but I have taken the first step
which to me is the 5.1 sound system.
I don't even like watching a movie anymore without the surround sound present.
