NYC Hotels, 1 room - 3 guys, suggestions?

Hey everyone,

Going down to NYC at the end of the month with a couple friends, and we're looking at hotel options right now. Would love to use Priceline but to my understanding you can't select type of rooms on there (ie. two beds, etc.) We're trying to keep it at one room for the three of us to minimize costs too.

So........just wondering if anyone has any suggestions/sites for the best price on a room or suggestions on what we could get?

My friend found one spot, but it's pretty basic and is going to be $525 after all taxes for two nights, which sounds high to me.

The hostels in NYC are disgusting and should be avoided at all costs. That's from first hand experience.

Go with Priceline. Once your bid is accepted, call the hotel and request a room with 2 beds. The hotel will still accomodate you even if you use Priceline, you just have to make sure to call them after your bid is accepted.

My cousins stayed at one 2 years ago and didn't complain...but I take it they weren't very fussy

Thanks for this man, great deal.....tried searching on Travelocity but this hotel didn't come up for some reason. I'm gonna keep trying though.

Don't stay in Manhattan. Just go to Jersey for rooming. It's about 30% less and a lot better value for your dollar. I think there's a Comfort Inn just past the Holland Tunnel and easily accessible by the Path trains (subway). Have fun.

I couldn't disagree more!
When I stayed in NYC, I was there for 5 days. The first night I was well north of the park (away from pretty much everything) and it sucked. It was such a pain going to and from the hotel room. after the first night, I went to a hotel right in Times Square and it was well worth the extra money.

Just imagine you're in Times Square and you decide on a whim to go to dinner, or to a show, or to one of the clubs, but since NYC is a walking city, there's a good chance you've been walking a bit and have worked up a bit of a sweat. You want to go back to your room to get showered and changed, but it's about 20 minutes each way, if not longer.

You'll save some money by staying in Jersey, but IMO the extra money is worth it to stay where all the action is. After all, you're going to NYC, not Jersey, you may as well stay in the place you're going to visit.

Here's what I would do in your situation:

- Be very flexible with your dates as rates can vary dramatically. The following calendar from the Times of London lists some cheap times:



- Try using Hotwire and BetterBidding. Hotwire lets you specify three people. Check this list to see if you can discover the name of the hotel listed on Hotwire then cross-reference against TripAdvisor. For example, Hotwire has the Holiday Inn Express in "Chelsea" for $437 with taxes from Aug 28 - Aug 30. It's called a "3 star hotel in Midtown South." I also saw the Millennium UN Plaza on 1st Ave and the Sheraton on there a lot when I was searching but be careful as some of those places are dumps.

- Look at TravelZoo

- Look at Radio City Apartments

- Some of the lower end Hilton chains seem decent and seem to have OK rates if you search their site just right.

- If considering a room in Jersey try and get one on the PATH which is a subway between Manhattan and New Jersey. The problem is that these rooms are nearly as expensive as those in Manhattan.

- Sometimes it's cheaper to book a room with two beds for two people than it is to book that same room for three people. Can be risky though.

- Apple Core Hotels (Some complaints about some properties.)

- Quikbook (Dumps a lot of crap properties in there though.)

I'm vacationing in Jersey now. I tried getting a hotel via Priceline in the Times Square area. But I wasn't able to win a bid in the USD $150-$175 range for a 3 star. Keep in mind if you win a hotel in Manhattan via Priceline, you will still have to spend around USD $25 per day to park your vehicle there. So I bid and won in Elizabeth, NJ at the Country Inn & Suites for CAD $60 inc taxes per night. It's a new hotel and is quite nice with free breakfast. They have a complimentary shuttle to the P4 parking area at Newark Airport. You then board the Air Train for one stop to the Newark Airport Train Station. You then board the New Jersey Transit train for USD $15 one way per person and on the 3rd stop you arrive at New York Penn Station (30 mins later). Overall, it's quite easy to get into Manhattan. But if you really want to stay and see Manhattan, I would stay in the City because if you factor in the time to get in and out and plus the USD $30 per person round trip to get back into Jersey, it can be a pain. Since I come here every year, I really don't need to spend the whole time in Manhattan. And our hotel is right across the street from Jersey Gardens Mall, their newest outlet mall. Great for shopping and no taxes on clothes. And with our dollar at USD $0.95, prices are cheap.

If you've still haven't booked by now, look into Super 8 Hotel. Its literally a minute walk from time square. Breakfast was okay, nothing special, there was a small exercise room, free access to a computer, reasonably clean, window ac, and the price was really good (not sure exactly what it was cause I went with a huge group of friends and got a group discount).
