Tomorrow Liberal MPP Mike Colle is chairing a large "Bedbug Summit" at Queens Park to discuss the issue of the pests.
I'm curious as to what RFDers would like the laws to be over the issue.

Fines for hotels and apartments that don't deal with the issue.
I always check my mattress at every place I stay now, too much of a population explosion of them going on.

Check this out. Just about every hotel in the western hemisphere has a report of them. The number of apartments are rediculous as well.LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked blainehamilton for this post.

I posted on bedbugregistry.com last year and I got hassled so much by my property manager, that I eventually asked the webmaster to remove my post. So just a word of caution, use an anonymous name if you do leave a report..

i never seen one with the naked eye, so even if i try looking for them, i don't know what to search for. I have seem them in pictures, but because the scale is so exaggerated, i can't tell whether i'll be able to see them or not if i tried looking

If they will just allow the use of DDT again, lots of issues would be solved, not just BB. Outlawing that stuff was just a knee jerk over reaction by the powers that be. Where I grew up, the USAF would carpet spray the entire area with c-130's during the summer. Kept the mosquito's at bay and also everything else was under control. So far I tuned out fine and as kids we would be outside when spraying was happening feeling it land on us as we played. Not sure what the big deal is/was.

It causes birth defects in animals. Americans were particularly concerned because it was thinning the shells of eagle eggs and causing them to die young. You might wanna see the doctors regularly when you have kids.
Chemicals aside, doesn't extreme temperature kill bedbugs? I've read there are companies out there that will raise the temp of your house to about 60 degrees celsius and kill the bugs and eggs within an hour. Pair that with a decon unit to get them off you/your clothes and the problem would be solved in any given building. I've heard spreading diatomaceous earth around will dehydrate and kill them as well._______________

I've checked every hotel bed I've stayed at in the past 4-5 years. 4 different times I've had to ask to switch rooms because I have found them. Takes 2 minutes to pull the blankets/sheets off the bed and look. It's not hard to spot them when they are there.
The real issue is when a hotel refuses to accept they have a problem. In Vegas I have never had a problem getting a different room (and once got an upgrade as an apology) but on my last trip to Toronto in 2009, the airport hotel I was staying in couldn't give me another room and offered to 'change the sheets' as a courtesy. Needless to say, I stayed elsewhere...
Just use common sense when you travel. Don't put your suitcase on the bed or carpet when you travel, use a stand. Don't unpack your clothes into the room furniture. Wash all your clothing in hot water after a trip.
These things can be a horror to get rid of if they get into your home. Steam cleaning, hot washing or freezing of all your clothes. Having to remove baseboards and carpet. Having to throw away and buy new boxsprings and matresses in really bad infestations. (that explains the christine mcgee house)
Part of the reason this has become such an issue is because hotel and apartment landlords who don't deal with the situation immediately or at all. If there was a true fine/penalty system for repeat occurances, you can bet places would get cleaned up properly the first time an incident is reported.Last edited by blainehamilton; Oct 1st, 2010 at 04:31 PM.

good to know you can freeze your clothes to kill bedbugs. some clothes can't stand hot water washing, so i guess the freezer is the best alternative before washing. are these bedbugs generally the size of say a piece of dust? or a grain of pepper?LOG IN TO THANK No one has yet thanked Questionz for this post.

I only left my first name, but he figured out it was probably me. Also, the property manager found the report because if you google my address, it shows up as the second hit (second to the buildings website)._______________A W E S O M E N E S S
